Primers fitting loosely in RST shells.
I tried both federal and Winchester 209 primers in a couple of spent 2 7/8” RST 10 gauge hulls today. I can push both brands of primers completely flush with my thumb. Any tips or suggestions to get primers to seat with some holding force in RST hulls?

Another member and I were just discussing this yesterday, and I find the Cheddite primers are anywhere from .0005" to .001" larger the a W209.
As Pete says, a primer pocket tool is the fix. |
I’m guessing it’s the “peener” tool?

Or a little hammer. My RST hulls are starting to shed their WW209 primers too.

I havent had a problem--yet-- with WW209 primers in my RST and Herters/cheddite reloads. However I just picked up 3000 Cheddite primers($30/thousand) and will use them in my cheddite reloads from now on.

I painted the primers with waterproof primer sealant and also the primer hole. I tried 11 rounds today and they all stayed put. I did try the straw trick and they stayed put but figured I’d try sealant as well.

I knocked out my primers yesterday with the lee loader tool. I had to give a firm tap or two to get them out. The sealant seems to hold them in pretty good. This is my first go at shot shell reloading and I only have 11 spent RST 2 7/8” hulls currently so I don’t plan on it being a reoccurring practice. I bought three boxes of 10 RST shells to try out in my gun. When 30 hulls are eventually worn out I’ll switch over to some of my remington, federal, and Winchester spent 3.5” hulls I used in my browning gold. At least now I know not to buy cheddite hulls because the only primers have in my inventory for shotgun use are 209.

$1 nail polish from the dollar store. Different colors for different shot sizes.
