12g load what is yours?
I want to apologize up front if this is a duplicate as I did not see any in the search. I am brand new to these old irons but would like to load a low pressure smokeless powder load.
I need the 2 1/2 inch hull. What hull and a receipe do you use. Do you just cut down your hulls? papers? wads? Any help is appreciated. |
I assume your Parker has the original 2 1/2 or 2 9/16 inch chambers. Most of mine do.
So... just get your hands on some AA, STS or other skivved mouth hulls. Stick with ONE type. Don't worry about cutting them down. You don't need to. Then get some Claybuster 3/4 oz wads (pink) and follow any of the recipes that are printed on the back of the bag label. You will be delighted at how this light load works on clays and small birds like doves or quail. For pheasant, use 7/8 oz loads with wads from the same maker. |
I use the 2 1/2 RST hull scrounged from various shoots. 20 gr of International clays and a Gulandi wad (GU-1222) ignited by a Win 209 primer and either 1oz or 7/8 oz of shot. With the GU-1222 wad I use a Cherrio as a filler to obtain the best crimp. 1 oz loads are 1200 FPS and 6800PSI.

My gun measures 2 5/8 as close as I can tell. I load all STS 2 3/4 hulls for my regular guns so I would LIKE to shoot them but am very worried. HOW important is cutting them down? If you load a 5kpsi load and put a 2 3/4 hull in a 2 5/8 gun it should be ok? I use 700x and do not see anything lower than 7200. What is the powder that can get that low?

Tim:
Sherman Bell and Tom Armbrust tested 2 3/4 inch cases as compared to 2 1/2 inch cases in short chambers years ago. Pressure increase with a skivved hull like the STS was only 25 psi or so. In other words, virtually nothing. I've shot 2 3/4 inch hulls in all my short double guns for years, and over tens of thousands of shots, never saw a hint of pressure problems. Just get the Claybuster 3/4 oz wads, load about 14 or 15 grs of Red Dot and don't worry about it. Velocity will be about 1150 and pressure about 5700 psi. I'm sure you can reason out a load with 700X too. Or call Claybuster for data. |
Tim;
Try Clays powder. Very clean burning and just a wonderful 3/4oz. load in the 12. Go to Hodgdon's website for a list of their loads and don't worry about 2 1/2" vs. 2 3/4". John's advice is correct. |
Thank you guys. I am sure that info is second nature to you guys but was unsettling to me to just try it without some advice. thanks again for the replies.

Brian and Rich,
Are using a Mec to reload the 2.5" RSTs? If you are, how do you get the height set-up for the shorter hulls? Thanks Ken |
