Sounds kinda stupid I know but it's the truth . The same guy that I got this from has a Springfield 03 Sporter that was done in Halzburg . And when they did it , it was profusely engraved with a nice Roe Buck scene on the floorplate and a butter knife bolt handle ! I'd kinda like to get that one as well just for the engraving  |
Here's the Springfield I made mention of and no I've not added this to my accumulation (yet).

Wow
Picking one of those two would not be easy So you would have to take both :rotf: |
I wouldn't mind just getting the floorplate off the Sprigfield if it would fit something I already have !
|
That is one gorgeous Springfield! If it were mine I would get a piece of wood to match the quality of the engraving.

Actually if I got that Springfield I might go so far as to rebarrel it to 6.5-06 . The 30-06 is to plain vanilla for that rifle :rotf:

craig youve got the perfect gun now...the 12x12 x57rto me would be the perfect gun..... slug in one barrel buckshot in the other and of course the rifle for the long shots... charlie

So I'm not so sure buckshot will do much in it . Gonna take a box of WIN Supreme 2 3/4" copper 00 Buck and a couple Brenneke slugs to see what happens  |
Todays results with the drillings and combo gun were pretty satisfying !
I had the Kettner hammer drilling 16-16-10.75x65R Collath , the Sauer 12-12-7x57R , the Kerner 16-16-7x57R and the Zoli 12-7x57R with me today . Shot the Kettner first with my new handloads using the modified 405 WIN brass at 50 yards and clocked them as well . Load averaged 1550 FPS with a 207 grain lead bullet and 16.5 grains of Unique out of the 26.75" barrel . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12001.jpg The sauer with the Rottewial factory ammo did this at 50 yards and averaged 2482 FPS from a 23.75" barrel . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12002.jpg The Kerner with the same 7x57R ammo averaged 2471 FPS also from a 23.75" barrel . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12003.jpg And finally the Zoli 7x57R combo gun averaged 2530 FPS from a 25.75" barrel with the same ammo . http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12004.jpg From the front ; Kettner Sauer Kerner Zoli http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12005.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f3...p4-4-12006.jpg Shot some of my handloaded 16 gauge low pressure with 12 #1 Buck loads in the Kerner on paper at 25 yards and they shot really well from both barrels . I was surprised as tight as the thing is choked . I tried some Winchester Supreme 12 gauge 2 3/4" copper plated 00 Buck in the Sauer and the Zoli and all three barrels proved to shoot a nice tight pattern at 25 yards plenty good enough for deer and again I was surprised . I also tried Brenneke 2 3/4" slugs in the Sauer . The left barrel is dead on at 25 and 50 yards but the right barrel is wide right at both distance . That kinda leads me to believe they wanted you to shoot buck in the right barrel and a slug in the left barrel . All in all a rather informative range session ! |
I had a Franz Kettner sidelock drilling, and it was also stocked for a lefty, like yours. I wonder if he had a lefty customer who might have ordered both.
I have had too many drillings, in every conceivable configuration, to criticize you for getting that Sauer, but in my opinion, you should have brought the Springfield home first. Very few gunsmiths and gun makers in Europe were willing to admit the 1903 action was beter than the K98 action, so it's very rare to see a European made bolt gun with a Springfield action. Over here, there were many who recognized the Springfield as superior. Principally, Robert J Owen, who before going his own way, was Winchester's top bolt guru in the custom shop. Also, Sedgely, of Philadelphia, made beautiful guns ,but often plain in appearance. He made his own barrels. The best Griffen & Howes were built on the '03 action also. I have an extremely rare Belding & Mull bolt mounted aperture sight for a Springfield. It is complete with the rear bolt. It looks so sexxy on my G&H, but that gun also has a Lyman 48, and the two don't go together. That sight was also very popular at Camp Perry. You buy that Springfiled, and we'll talk. |

Thanks for the offer of the peep sight if I get the Springfield . I expect if I get it I'll have it drilled and tapped for bases and mount a nice old Bear or Redfield scope if I can find one I like . As a looker this rifle is great , but for me to work up a decent load and shoot good groups with it I'm gonna need a new trigger and or fair amount of work on this one . And older gentleman that lived about 25 miles from me had a very nice Sedgley made on a Springfield action . It was chambered in R2 Lovell , I tried several times to get that rifle from him but to no avail . Couple years ago I heard he had sold all his guns and I think he has since passed . This guy had several old 1878 Sharps that had been rebarreled to R2 Lovell 22 G&H and 22 Blue Streak . This fellow had been the consumate ground hog hunter back in the day and all he ever used were 22 Hornets , R2 Lovell's the 22 G&H and the Bluestreak ! All pretty much less then a 223 REM . |
craig it looks to me like thr old guns all done well....i once had a 8x15 x46 r kinda of a rare old cartride...some fella made me some shells outa 30-30 and 32 winchester special hulls...seem like the 32 special brass worked better...mine gun was a cobination hammer gun...traded that old gun off for a 36 ford coupe wish i still had the gun and the coupe... charlie
