Choke gauge - professional model
Hi,
I am interested in buying a top quality choke gauge for my Dad. We have the tapered type that is a simple stick in the end of the barrel. But I would like a much higher quality. I see one listed on Galazan - is this good - or are there others that members prefer? Need to measure 12, 16, 20, 28. Thanks |
I bought the dial styles from Galazan's quite a while back. They had one for the 12/16 bores but you had to get a separate one for the 20/28. I think it is a perfectly good gauge for the money.
These are about 18 inches long, is this what you're asking about? . |
Yes - Just need to know that these are quality. Thanks
|
"Quality" is subjective - but they are certainly "good enough" for most of us.
. |
Ok. Good enough will be fine

I can't find a dial micrometer on Tony's website.
|
Hosford’s bore gauge works great.
|
I guess they must be digital now Bill.
. |
Google "the unloader", he makes both analog and digital bore mics.
|
The dial gauge Tony sells is a Chinese copy of a Chubbs gauge, but not the quality of the Chubbs. As Dean says, it’s good enough.

What is the advantage of a longer vs shorter Bore gauge? Gary makes a 14” but can make longer. Thx
|
A longer bore gauge will allow checking the entire bore for irregularities in boring/honing/polishing etc. A 16” gauge will allow you to check a set of 32” barrels. You can also measure the length of the forcing cones and the length of the choke. Some Parker chokes have been measured at about 6” in length and I once measures cones of 9” in length on a set of barrels that had been severely “messed with”.

Any preference digital or analog?
|
With the analog mic, you calibrate the gage using calibrated rings of a certain diameter. For instance, you calibrate the mic using the .700 ring when measuring a 12 bore barrel. You use different shafts depending on the gauge your measuring but you unscrew the gage and screw it on the different shaft, at least that's how my Stan Baker mics works. Never used a digital one but it's probably similar.

I prefer dial analog . No battery’s and as long as you don’t drop it trouble free. Accuracy is limited by the linkage no advantage one vs the other.

exactly Chuck
there is a ring of a known inside diameter (.700 for a 12) and you zero the digital to that i have both analog and digital- either or- no preference but- you do need to keep a spare battery round for digital unless you like cussing |
theunloader.com is the website. Hear nothing but good about Gary's gauges. $125.00. I've not owned one because my Galazan micrometers from 20 years ago work just fine. I also have one of Tony's $500.00 micrometers, but I can't find them in the catalog any more.
