I'm heading to Winnipeg for Christmas. I'm still debating hunting there and back but haven't yet decided. I did get out yesterday. Charlie and Kyra did admirable work. I have been missing more than hitting for some reason lately. Maybe it is the heavy mit/glove or maybe wind or maybe cold or maybe I'm not that good a wing shot. Ended the day with 2 roosters and 2 huns but should surely have had my 3 roosters. One of the huns is full credit to Charlie. Found it in a roosting spot and caught it before it flushed. I got the other one, which Charlie retrieved nicely from heavy cover. Just another great Saskatchewan winter's day along the frozen creeks with my favorite Parker game getting GHE Damascus 12ga Cheers, Jack

Thanks. I'm doing okay. Operating the camera with gloves/mits is almost more of a challenge than stuffing the trigger finger into the guard and onto a trigger. Add to that a dog in motion and I end up with this :)

 maybe the gun and the camera both have itchy trigger fingers.:rotf:

These particular shots are with a little Panasonic Lumix. When I get really carried away, I use a Canon EOS 30D and sometimes give that a little kick with a telephoto lens. When hunting, the little Lumix fits in the pocket along with #4 Canucks that I found last year. Old guns, old ammo, old guys - kind of a natural combo.

Well my debate with myself was resolved. I drove over 100 miles out of my way to see if there were any roosters along my favorite creeks. There were. Shot a nice one early on. Watched a few others put distance between themselves and us. Charlie was on scent often. Flushed a few hens. At one point she was on the creek bank, almost vertical. I was waiting for the flush but the bird was holding very tight. Charlie started digging into the snow and weeds, until she was half buried. She started to back out ever so slowly. She was probably on a 75 or 80 degree drop. Looked funny but she came out with "her" bird. It was a dandy rooster (I didn't wan't to have to explain anything to the game wardens had it been a hen). She had dispatched it with one bite. I think she had decided she may as well not bother flushing, just do it all until I get my percentage up. :)
Now having done the hunt, I'm in the dark at Brandon McD having a coffee with a couple more hours yet to drive. Obviously, I'm a confirmed upland addict. Sorry, no pics. Somehow the camera remained at home. Fun gettin' older. No, not an age thing just my own scatterbrain functioning.
Cheers,
Jack

Merry Christmass Jack. I have done some Snow Goose and upland birds (Grouse and Huns) around Brandon. I hope you had a safe drive home.

Next thing you'll probably leave your gun home (been there - done that... arrived at a fishing destination 40 miles from home only to discover I forgot to pack my rod )

No. 4 Canuck! I was telling a CIL ammo rep 45 years ago of a great day's shooting Canucks, below the middle Maxum and top Imperial grades. "Of course you will," he said. "Less pressure, less flyers, better patterns." In my village, fishermen making a subsistence living only used the dark-blue Imperials. Marketing.
