I would get a good full length zipper case. That will afford the guns good protection and won’t eat up the SS check. Leg of mutton’s are risky if you aren’t experienced enough to know what to look for.

I agree, Joseph, a LoM case, one with the right “patina” would be excellent for either. Join the PGCA, post your want list in the members section, and you may find just what you need.

When I first started going around to these uhm SxS events I’d carry way more guns than I needed and had them pretty much all in LOM cases . I’d pick them up kinda cheap fix this that or the other and used them . But each event I’d attend with 12-20 guns seemed I’d always break something or tear stitches or some such garbage . Now if I go I don’t take anywhere near as many guns and use Boyt canvas take down cases .

Agree with Mike. Clean and lube your Fox, Parker or any SxS or O/U, put it together and transport it that way. I promise you, more damage will occur as you attempt to assemble your gun on your tailgate or at your trunk. Ask me how I know.

Full length padded zipper case. Any kind of takedown case is a pain when travelling with a lot of guns.

An aluminum padded case is best for airline travel. You have to pack your gun in a secure well padded case as the baggage handlers are notorious for tossing cased guns around. I know

So, Joseph, I interpreted your question to be what case would be age appropriate for your late teens guns. I still think the LoM case to be a good move. However, like many of my colleagues here, I use long cases for my guns when hunting. Like has been stated, not having to assemble the gun repeatedly, makes for fewer opportunities for a mishap.

So, again, join the PGCA and see what members might have to offer.

I have a half-dozen LOM cases; they are stored up in the floor joists in my basement and haven't been moved in years. They're cool, but too much trouble. I have a single and a double long case and they're all I ever use.

For "light" travel a couple of LoM cases. For airline or bed of the truck with a ton of gear I have a bullet proof, heavily padded double SKB case that's TSA approved and locks securely. It's heavy, a pain, but the guns are safe.

I have dozens of leg of mutton cases, almost as many trunk cases, and still have a half dozen aluminum airline approved cases from my competition days. None of these cases has been out of the house in years except to take them to a show to sell them.

Yes, sound like the "LOM" is proffered.
But the full zipper OAL padded case wins, with the ready to go if the field.

The "VH" & the "REM 1894" [Damascus barrels], presently use that type.

Of COURSE, if there a INSANELY priced offers from the PGCA members , that's a different idea.

When I'm going hunting I use a full length zipper case. When going to a SXS shoot I use a soft take down case such as those by Boyt. For transporting a hammer gun I use a LOM or a trunk case.

For hunting who honestly cares, the case isn't shooting the bird. I am a fan of the canvas zippered "leg of mutton" style cases where I can chuck 6 guns on the seat and carry them all at once to my destinatino/cabin. My biggest mistake was not buying 100 of these when they were on sale years ago for $19.99

I loved the Orvis breakdown cases, when they were available. I recently purchased one from Galco, which has the similar fleece lining.
