I've never seen a grouse in person. Bobby, were the ones in N. GA as big as the one lying beside James' VH? or were they smaller, like the other bird pictured?

Jim, we had temps overnight in the 30s but by mid-day it was 70. Sounds like this week's temps are not much different. Tough on the dogs.
Run into any woodcock? We only flushed 3.

Same was true in Michigan this week. Way warmer than what we normally expect in October. We put up some grouse, but very few woodcock. And those had to be local birds, no flight birds yet.
But, hey, isn't a bad day hunting better than a good day at work?? LOL!

We flushed quite an unusual number of woodcock in VT over three days of hunting something like 20 or so and about half that number of grouse.

But I have never seen a Ruffed Grouse looking as gargantuan as the one that is pictured alongside Jim's VH. Is it an optical illusion, lens/light, or depth of field distortion? If not, what a bird to feast on!

Mike that's exactly the weather we had. We flushed about 25 grouse and 15 woodcock, but saw very few of the grouse due to the leaf cover. It was so bone dry and crunchy I'm sure there were more grouse we moved that we didn't know of. The lowest it got over night was 36 so we didn't have the benefit of a frost to burn off in the morning to help scenting.

Hope this warm weather cools down. Leaving friday morn. for 2 weeks+ in the UP. Looks like a cold front is coming soon. My son will be coming up sometime in the second week for his first upland trip.

It may have been an adult and a young of the year. That would account for the apparent size difference. I have seen that many times with grouse.
