Thanks to Mr. Carr and his work with the Arizona Game and Fish Department, I was able to complete a long time dream of hunting with an 8 gauge. I loaded up 8 shells with 4.5 drams of 777 and 1.5 oz of 7.5 lead. I traded out my Sterlingworth 20 ga with my W.H Tisdale 8 ga after early morning success. Unfortunately I did not succeed in hitting any quail with the 8. Walking around and trudging up and down all day with a 12 lb 8 gauge was exhausting, but just to get to shoot the 8 gauge at game was an unforgettable experience. I will have to load more and try again next week. After a day of abhorrent shooting I finally got warmed up with the Fox Sterlingworth and managed to make one of the finest shots of my hunting career on a crossing shot on a quail rocketing past me at about 40 yds. Below is the days haul from my hunter partner and I.

Than you. Glad you were able to get out. We should plan an 8 gauge day with Wayne and yourself as well as other 8 gauge shooters in our area once it cools off. Although we may need to hire some gun bearers.

Loaded 8 Gauge Shells
That is a cool looking cartridge showing the load. That has to be about one of the squarest looking loads I can recall seeing. If there is anything to theory about square loads, patterns and shot string that gun ought to perform well. Obvious issue is gun weight swinging and slinging that beast around. Definitely not an upland gun but probably a covey killer if you could ever get gun up to shoulder in time for the flush.
A gun that heavy almost needs shooting sticks. Nothing dainty about that firearm. I don't know much about the history of that gauge but it can't be designed for flushing game. I'll bet it would work wonders on ducks or geese coming into a decoy set.

I'm jealous the only birds I've shot with my 8 have been pigeons and starlings. Don't think I'd like to pack mine very far as it weighs 16 lbs. It would be interesting to hunt geese or turkeys with it.
The first picture makes me want to hunt quail in Arizona again.

Todd, once you get that 8 bore swinging you don't have to worry about stopping your swing................
