Decoying and calling Crows are a great way to stay in good form for duck season.

yep j. a. its time to drag out the cans...i ve not weighed this gun but feels about 6 lbs..certainly crows are a good way to stay in form on shooting but our crow season does not start till november...don t know why we donot have a open season on crows...probably have to shoot the dr pepper cans early in the morning for it s hot here up in the day...i guess i need to order a letter on this little 20 ga its a pretty nice gun...charlie

Cannot hunt crows, no problem. It is orange bird season everywhere. Take that 20 to a skeet or sporting course and break some targets. It is a great diversion during the lull between seasons and you'll find out the 20 has a lot to offer. It will sharpen you up for dove season and blow the cobwebs from the barrels.

After the 4th, it is just downhill to Sept. and dove season. Need to make to the gun club at lease once a week, figure out what RST's I need to order and really start working the dog in August. Have grouse woodcock trip planned for Oct. Hope to pick another bird trip somewhere.

Got in some great trout fishing this past week in NC. Other than that, it is a long hot summer til we get some relief with bird season

Hmmm... three Salvelinus Fontinalis and one Salmo Trutta... sea run or stocked??
What happened to the little guy on the bottom? Is that wound from a lamprey?
... more probably a loon or a heron.
Looks like you kill them in the old Maine guide's way, same as I do.

Top two are stocked, other two are native and you are right Dean, heron wound on both side of the trout. Law requires immediate kill, done the old guide way with fish iced right after. Not sea run, I release all of those except the rare trophy brown. These are from spring fed tributary of the Presumpscot River

I also hate the wait, but try not to wish some of my life's time away. Our squirrel season opened at the end of May, but it's so darned hot it's not a viable option for an old guy (that would be me!). We start scouting for dove fields in mid August and it's generally a bit cooler in the early morning.
Traveling to Barnes, WI next week to attend the program about Gordon McQuarrie. Trying to fill the dog days gets harder and harder each year as I get more impatient to spend my time with the dogs chasing birds. The dogs seem to take all things in stride. Why can't people be more like them (except for the sniffing, er, well, you know...).

Gordon McQ was one of the best all time outdoor writers ever...I wish he'd wrote more about grouse and woodcock hunting

Not to hijack the thread, but what is the "Maine Guide way" of killing a trout? Much of the water I fish is Catch and Release, but every once in while, I get on some water that allows taking a few fish. Nothing better than fresh caught trout simmering in butter in a cast iron skillet over a wood fire....

Holding the trout's body in your hand you put your forefinger in his mouth and pulling up and back over the top of his body his spine will break just behind his head.
This will leave those lighter patches on his back just behind his neck where the scales have lifted from being compressed.
