Charlie,
I'm not a die-hard turkey hunter but this beautiful Tom met his match with a load of 7/8 ounce #6 from a full choked 20gauge at 30 yards. I don't think I would go any smaller on the shot size beyond that range but that's just me.

My opinion on that load Charlie is inside of thirty yards with the Full choke barrel. over thirty yards I would recommend #6 shot with a 7/8 oz. load, but I still wouldn't take a 40 yard shot with it. You want all the pattern density you can get for a target as small as the skull and neck of a turkey.

Charlie,

I'd use one ounce but I would try both 7 1/2 and 6 shot. You may find the 6s do as well as the smaller shot. One never knows unless you pattern it from the position you will shoot from.

Target attached.

Maybe 7 1/2 right for 25 yards and in, and 6s left for up to 30?

I would say you need a minimum of 12 pellets in a Dr. Pepper can at thirty long paces.

You see pictures on other chat groups where guys kill turkeys with a 410...it depends on the distance of the bird. I've killed a couple with my 20 gauge with 6 shot and now 2 with my 16 gauge with 5 shot. The bird I got on Saturday took both barrels at 30 yrds. My 16 is is choked M/F. The full barrel at 30 yrds was the ticket.
