Deer season here

Again I must apologize as this isn't a Parker not even a double but still a nice vintage 1940 Winchester model 71 deluxe, 348 of course.

Took this mule deer yesterday morning. He's a 2x4 just over 24" wide and was very heavy and fat. Going to be good eating. The second picture is of him hanging on one of my two new 1500 pound electric winch game hoists that are on 5" I beams in a 16' tall purpose built dormer in my garage. Got tired of walking around deer and elk hanging in the garage. After our fire last year we decided to build this dormer for hanging big game. Can't wait to use it for elk.

Hope this isn't too offensive. Guess I should just put a Parker or two in every picture.

Congrats on a very nice buck. You have a great setup there. One question on Mule Deer. I have heard that they are not particularly good eating because of the sage brush that they typically eat. I guess that is not true? Good luck elk hunting.

The steaks and rolled roasts from my daughters Montana mule deer were as good as venison gets! Our family eats mostly game and very little beef and all love venison. Tonight it was elk chili - must be in a run, same thing as last night. :)

That is a nice buck you got with that fancy lever action rifle. I guess it shoots that newfangled smokeless powder too? Also a nice setup you have to hang them up but how did that deer squeeze his head under the door?

Had some luck myself last Saturday but I don't have much modern equipment.

Nice speed goat. I got my one and only one with a muzzleloader some years ago.

At one time I hunted only with muzzleloaders but was lured away by the siren call of the new fangled breechloaders. My muzzleloader friends all said I went to the "dark side" to "suppository guns" as they called them. But truth be known I like collect and shoot guns if they are "old" by today's standards.

Here's a picture of myself and my older son quite a few years ago with a rifle similar to yours. My rifle is a model 1874 Sharps made in Bridgeport, caliber is 45 2 1/10" aka 45-70. As the saying goes, " if it could only talk". Mine doesn't have one of those glass tube sights like yours but I'm at the point it would make seeing a sight picture much easier.

Monday starts deer season in Ohio. Trail cameras show several 140+ bucks, plus a nice array of smaller 10 pt bucks that will be hard to pass up should they show themselves on my farm

Yes, I do reload for everything I own including the 348. I've thought about buying a bullet mould for it but I don't shoot it enough to be worth the investment.

I see you're planning on hunting deer with a 500 BPE double, that should do it. The British thought the 500 a wonderful Stag rifle.

The British BPE doubles are fun to hunt with, I've taken some game with those that I own. Here's a little Mule Deer that I took several years ago with my T. Turner 500-450 BPE.

Nice deer. I struck out on Mule Deer this year but it happens sometimes. We have a late antlerless season that lets me use some fun rifles that I wouldn't probably use otherwise. In addition to the 348 there is a M94 38-55, the 500 BPE, a Ruger #1 450-400 NE. This is a fun gun to shoot when loaded with Trail Boss and some Hornady pistol bullets.

I too like the 38-55, put one together on a mdl 94 for a friend, but never owned one. I haven't managed to get a 500 yet but maybe someday. A friend has a Ruger #1 in 450-400 that he likes, I'm considering re-barreling my #1 243 to 450-400. My other #1 is a 470, it can be fun to shoot but only in short strings with full house loads. I've recently acquired a 400 grain bullet mold of the proper diameter and may cast some to shoot in it.

You're lucky to have an antlerless season, our Mule Deer population has shrunk over the years to the point that we have a lottery system for tags.
