I have a October hunt planed for Phillips Wisconsin....never been there before. A friend invited me to the area. His group rent a big old house for two weeks each October. I will be staying with them. I may be hunting on my own? They hunt two men to a party and I am odd man unless they are a man short. Any info about hunting this area for grouse and doodles would be helpful. This part of the state has many areas to look for coverts. My primary gun will be a 1922 VH-16 26" O-frame at 6lbs-4oz choked open and tight. My hunting pal is my Gordon setter Ruby that is in her prime at 4.5 years, 64lbs of bird hunting magic.....(-: Thanks all SXS ohio

Hard to imagine that if you have been invited to their 'grouse camp' that they would not include you to make a threesome..... how rude is that?

Kenny I don't know where Phillips, WI is but I'll be in the Upper Peninsula the month of October if you want to swing by. I'm about a 30min ride north of Iron Mtn. Check it out on a map and if it will work let me know.

It's a great area. I'll be going to Phillips in October as well. This will be my 2nd trip up there. My group hunts with setters too. What dates will you be there?

Ken, I have hunted Price County Wi., (Phillips is the county seat) for the last twenty years. I would suggest traveling north 15 miles to a town named Fifield, then going east or west on hwy. 70,you will find thousands of acres of prime grouse habitat. There is Federal, state, county, and lumber company land available. Price County tourism offers a detailed map of public land. The county used to offer a grouse hunting packet which included the map. Their phone number is 715 339 4505. A good steak can be found at Reds Flambeau Forest Inn, on cty hwy W. Even if your not hungry you need to see this place! Lots of timber wolves up there, keep your dogs close. Good luck!

Kenny, whether you hunt by yourself, or with others, just go, and enjoy. It will take a while, but you will learn what makes grouse and woodcock cover, and how to hunt it, and how to be comfortable in it. Take a GPS, or 2, and a compass and KNOW how to use them--the google earth and viewranger apps on invaluable and you can start scouting for covers right now, long before you get up there. I have hunted the UP and over around Phillips for over 30 years and you will flush more birds in a day than you will find in Ohio all season. It will do wonders for your dog. I once had job offers to run the eye dept. in Park Falls clinic many years ago, but had to decline.
I will be in the UP just a few miles from Rich, the last 2 weeks of October.
