I've looked long and hard to find factory 28 ga. slug ammo.

It would be easy to load some using a sabot muzzle-loader of the right caliber... whatever that might be.

I tried 20 ga. Remington rifled slugs in my 28" Titanic Steel 20 ga. barrels choked IC/MOD and the crossover was ridiculous. At 30 yds. the right barrel printed at 9" to the left of center and 9" low while the left barrel printed at 10" to the right of center and 8" low. What a waste of time that was.

A 54 cal powerbelt bullet might work if you were going to make your own.
I think Breneke (not sure on the spelling) may make a 28ga slug or did at one time.

Making home cast Lyman slugs for the 12 gauge was no big deal . And I killed a deer with them .

The same thing should be relatively easy with the Lyman 20 gauge slug .

However I've not had a great amount of luck coming up with something that suits me in the 10 gauge or 16 gauge .

Don't have a 28 at the moment I wanna shoot slugs in so I've not put any effort into that one .

Legality is a non issue for me .

When we use the Damage Control Permits ANYTHING is legal . This past year I used sub sonic suppressed rifles and a host of other things . While 8 gauge and 22 centerfire ARE illegal during the regular gun season in my home state , they are perfectly fine during DCP hunting .

I realize the market isn't there , but I would love to see Lyman come out with molds for the 10 and 16 gauge that are similar to the sabot molds they make for the 12 and 20 gauge . And of course for those interested in the 28 or 410 as well .

But in reality I doubt if more then a dozen for any of the gauges mentioned would sell per year . Well perhaps the 16 would do a bit better , but I'm not 100% sure of that .

I will say however personally I derive quite a kick from using handloaded buckshot and homecast slugs in my old doubles . It's fun at the range and in the field .

Here is what I am using in my 16s. Brenneke 2.5" or 65mm, It's designed to work in vintage drillings and doubles.. I think this is a limited run so I stocked up. Shoots great! They don't even list it on their site and it looks like many of their distributors are out.

Here is another for 28ga. I cannot comment as I don't have any experience with it.

There are factory loaded 28ga. slugs by RWS, try Zanders sporting goods they did have them few months back. I have some, I always carry 3 rounds when hunting the big mountains in P.A. My hunting pal almost lost a setter to a big male coyote couple years back. A bear got after a grouse hunter I know...he was very lucky, his dog saved him most likely. Yes ...P.A. has the big cats too! Normally I hunt 16ga and always have 3 slugs when hunting the big mountains. SXS ohio

When it comes to my dog's health/life or my own.... legality takes a back seat.

agreed, but Brian was talking about deer hunting

in NY it is illegal to have any slugs (or buck shot ever) with you outside of deer season- NY assumes all hunters are poachers who just have not been caught yet

if one were of the mind to - they might load buckshot in a hull factory labeled 7 1/2 or 8, just a different brand so they can be id'ed in the pocket

that is IF one were of the mind to

I have some Breneke and other brand slugs for the 16 gauge .

But I'm more after something I can cast myself etc etc . I tried .578" mini balls and they left alot to be desired . I am now thinking round balls for the 10 and 16 or have Accurate Molds cut me something for the 10 and 16 based on the Lyman Sabot slug mold . I like this design as it works relatively well in a standard birdshot wad .

I have three boxes of 25 each Remington slugs that I bought about 35 years ago. I used some one time to kill a porcupine and it wouldn't even do that very well from about 10 yards. They're fairly ineffective.
