20 VH Buttstock

I want to address some of the problems with this 20 VH buttstock. I can restore the butt easily enough with a walnut extension and a buttplate but the tang and triggerguard are "proud", not sure how they got that way. There is also a gap between the inletting and the tang (see pics). I'm thinking maybe I should inlet the grip a little deeper, glass the gap, and tighten the screw down?

You will notice that the rear tang screw is not screwed in all the way. That may be the issue is things might just be a little loose.

Being the the stock looks like it was messed with some for fit, I wonder if maybe the stock has been bent in the past which may be causing some of the issues too.

Hard to tell exactly what the issue is there, but I am sure that some time with it taking it apart and testing fit of the different parts individually will point you in the right direction.

Inletting the stock deeper to accept a more flush-fitting tang and trigger guard can play the devil with the triggers and the safety.

The buttstock of this gun has been seriously bodgered by a "garage gunsmith." Who apparently believed the proper way to disposed of wood imperfections was to sand them out. Just look at how that guard tang hangs out...

Not to mention the reversed/misaligned hinge pin screw...


Sadly, any attempt to deepen/alter the inlet relationship of the Parker's upper and lower bits is an invitation to even more grief. Especially for a neophyte. The best you can do on this gun is enhance the butt to a decent LOP and shoot the gun until it needs totally restocked.
