Have wanted to ad a Fox to the rack to keep the Parkers on their toes. One is coming up soon on auction. It is listed as a 20 ga. AE from 1928 with 32" barrels. The pictures are very bad and a call provided mixed information. This one does not have much engraving. Only a "flower" around the bolt per the call. When did Fox change the engraving? I have not had the opportunity to see many graded Fox guns. Don't have the comfort level of information I have with Parkers. Checked the auction sites and the few available seemed to have quite a lot of the engraving. Prices also vary from 2 to $6000. Any insight with my brief description what this gun should bring? And I know condition and originality are the big factors.

I did pick up a very nice 1919 Ithaca catalogue With the Lynn Bogue Hunt cover at a lure show Saturday.

Gary: A Fox AE made in 1928 would have almost 75% engraving coverage. The Sterlingworth lever does have a simple line engraving that some may think looks like a flower. A 32" small bore Fox is a very rare gun and highly sought after by Fox nuts. Price could be in your range depending on condition.

The Fox guns introduced the "2nd generation engraving" around 1914. The early A grades are quite plain. A 1928 gun should have the newer style of engraving.

Gary, do you have the serial number? If you do, this site with the Fox serial number dates should confirm whether it is graded or a Sterlingworth.

I have an AE 20, 1919 production if I remember correctly, with 28" barrels. It is a wonderful little double. Good luck on the auction.

They provided the ser# as 282296 this morning.
From the info provided this does not improve my situation. I think I will have to go take a look.

Thanks to all that provided information.

If that is the correct serial number the gun the serial number list on Double Gunshop lists it as is a very late (Post 1940) production Sterlingworth. A 20 gauge Fox in any grade with 32 inch barrels is quite uncommon. I know of only one in my area and the family is not about to part with it.

Gary, if you give me the auction info I will be sure to check the Fox out for you. Just to make sure the gun and seller are on the up and up. :)

Mike thanks but I feel pretty comfortable with the information provided here and what I have been able to glean on my own this past week. I also have been to other auctions conducted by this auctioneer and know some of his tricks.

Todays auction.
I looked over the Fox 20 ga. before the auction.
The serial number was 202296 (not the number I was given a few days earlier). The barrels were 32 inch with 2 1/2 inch chambers and ejectors. The serial numbers matched all around. On the water table there was only the serial number. No grade stamp. The engraving was sparse. Not at all like post 1914 typical.

The auctioneer started at $1000 when a guy in the back yelled out $8000. It quickly went to $11000 and sold. I was not the buyer. What did I miss?

Only, financial ruin, an addiction unlike any other and The CZAR's 20b Super Fox!! :banghead:

I have a list of the usual suspects but would love a detailed description of the mystery man seated in the back row. :corn:

Good that you clarified that serial number. Fox 202296 is listed as one of about (sixty) 20-gauge Super-Fox guns made, in the SF chapter of MM's Fox book, page 230. Shipped on 11/26/25.

I have to get McIntoshs' Fox Guns book. Was working with his "best Guns" book.
