After an outstanding grand spring hunt, preparations are being made for our fall campaign. GSP Gunny is fired up, old guns are waxed and brass shells are reloaded. Foliage is starting to turn, poults are growing fatter on our bumper acorn crop. Maine opens on October 2nd followed by NH and VT. A Catskill hunt will be squeezed in after our NWTF Fall Hoot and Shoot.

Thank you Charlie. If you're ever up this way in October let's get together and "smoke" some wild turkeys. My home state of Maine is a hunters dream for fall turkey: incredible scenery, abundant birds and almost unlimited ground open to hunting. We hunt over thirty western Maine towns. Add to that an old Parker and a young dog adept at the Appalachian art of turkey doggin', what more could one want!

TL, I've never heard of "Turkey Doggin". I'm assuming you are using dogs in some fashion to hunt the birds. I would like to know more. Sounds intriguing

Beautiful photo! I wish we had a fall season down here. I have been turkey hunting in Ohio in the Fall and it was spectacular.

Mike, I see you enjoy the spring gobbler duels. The fall hunt uses dogs to find, scatter, bark on the flush and reunite with the hunters at the scatter site. Fall flock members are then called back together to the dog and gun. My GSP Gunny is a wide runner with a great voice. At three years old, he waits patiently and quietly most of the time. Most fall hunts allow the harvest of either sex. Gunny is also used on grouse and woodcock along with waterfowl, he seems to know the quarry based on the habitat we're in.

Thanks Charlie. Three New Brunswick rookie turkey hunters with GSP Gunny and fellow Tenth Legion guide Robb Cotiaux. Wish I knew how to attach more than one photo at a time:-)

Thanks Jim for the info. We have a fall season here in KY where much the sams strategy is used except I don't know if dogs are permitted. We walk up and scatter the flock and call them back. That's a good looking hunting party you got there.

Beautiful country, Tenth!

So what's your go-to call? The kee-kee run?

PS---I do see the tip of a windmill on that third ridgeline, Deanno!!

Last photo Quaker Ridge, Casco looking west toward Mt. Washington, NH. In the fall we imitate whatever we're hearing and kee kee and kee kee run often ring after a good scatter.

Do you ever use a Parker for your turkey hunts?

Jim Wescott

Dean, that's all I've used since acquiring a grade 1 1882 hammer gun 15 years ago. Tomorrow's opening day of Maine's fall turkey season and son Tim will be toting an old Clabrough Bros hammer gun, fellow Tenth Legion guide Robb will use the 1882 and I'll be "field testing" new-to-me 1889 GH. The new wrinkle is brass shells which sound awesome when chambered in the gloom of early morning.
Are you familiar with the Norway area?

Yes I am... From Naples and Denmark to Bridgedton up through Harrison, Norway and on up through Rumford and beyond. Great country for the hunter and fisherman the Western Maine Mountains. My 'stompin' grounds' are in Vermont's Northeast Kingdon but that entire band through northern New England is reason to never want for more.

Sling is from Levy's Leathers. Reloading brass shells with Goex FFg. Seeing and sorting through lots of birds, no smoke signals yet.... Tomorrow's another day. I hate filling a tag before it's time ;-)
Charlie, I carry the gun stock up as the sling can slide off the barrels when carried stock down.....you'll only do that once
GSP Gunny is having a blast!
