I got the call. My good friend DEMPS. "We have to go - we have to give it a try. we can break through ice to the channel. There are going to be birds". it was and easy sale - No dogs. We have to time our shots right.
We broke ice for 1/2 hour got to the small open water. Set up and started calling. We had quite a hunt. I believe it will be our last chance for a long time in the marsh.

it has been chilly here Angel. But nothing like it will get later - only 6 inches of snow and never got below the upper teens in the temp :rotf:
Mark, somewhere I have a vhs of a last of the season hunt on Tonawanda several years ago, the tape is labeled THE ICE HUNT
we broke ice in the channel, got set up, and were swarmed by mallards, the three of us had a but one short of the then 3 apiece limit in minutes. It was so cold that the guy who needed a bird took the next hen over just to get out and get warm.
those are the hunts you remember for years.
thanks for the post

You boys certainly had better luck than I did. Hunted with the Horn Brothers (my friend Tom Horn's sons) at their family camp this morning. It was 17 degrees when we took to the field and it never got above 30. Nothing moved till about 9am and then what we saw was sky high. The boys that hunted the impoundment killed one greenwing teal. Tom's oldest boy and I hunted the hill, we never fired a shot. Didn't matter though, we had a fine visit and I enjoyed myself a lot.

I went out with my 40 yo son this morning: 26 degrees, lots of ducks in the rice field, good shooting and a limit after 2 hours. We saw grays, mallards, teal, ringnecks and shovelers. A great time right up until sinking the pirogue in the 10 foot deep ditch!! All in All still a good morning with my youngest son. We will be back out Sat.

17 degrees in the deer blind this am. Took a nice custom 257R with me and enjoyed the rich walnut and case colors. No deer moved but the light snow and a dead calm morning was enjoyable.

I'm guessing that sinking a pea hull boat in 26 degree weather was a little bit on the bracing side. I thought I was cold standing in a metal pit blind......

Steve - He was home nursing an injured back. If he was not on the DL we would have had him in the boat with us. 10 bore in one hand and the double reed daisy cutter in the other. With the season cut short, I did not get the opportunity to hunt with him this year. I wish I had.
Here are a few more pictures from my season
First is DEMPS fetching up our birds on frozen Wednesday.
Second Is Doug and his dog Hanna after he doubled on greenheads -
And third another of DEMPS with a mallard sneaking up behind him.:)
