those 2 7/8 chambers were ordered for the 3 inch 16 ga shell shells made back when...charlie

This is only the third 16 that’s been brought to my attention having chambers for a 3” shell . And I heard about all of them in the last three months . Two Parker’s and a Smith . I wasn’t aware such a shell was ever manufactured.

Here you go Craig. Both are vintage 16-gauge roll crimps and unfired, standard 2-9/16" on left and 3" on right.
