First of all, my thanks for the answers to my previous questions. One more, if  can indulge...now that I know my Parker is a 1904 12 gauge double  V grade with 30" barrels, how can I determine if I can use 2 3/4 inch shells? I did check out the great information on the home page but couldn't find that infomation. I am planning on using mine for my duck hunting addiction unless you guys tell me I'm nuts.

If it's got good barrels, have the wall thickness measured, it should be fine for 2 3/4 shells. I've got an old DHE that's had hundreds of heavy 2 3/4 shells fired through it (just during my ownership) and it's still going strong.

What part of the country are you from?

I've shot out there a few times, real nice area needless to say. Was just out there this past January actually, had a day with the geese.

Destry, I happen to be lucky enough to walk out my back door and be in an offshore  blind on the Chesapeake in about 5 minutes....can see it from the porch. If I walk out the front door I'm about 8 minutes from a  little creek blind. Not bragging, just humbled and lucky.

Other than the occasional hunt with a Model 11 Remington or A-5 Browning I'm pretty much strictly a Parker man when it comes to waterfowling. I'm usually out that way at least once during the season.

Ever been to the Vintagers? It's out near Easton in September. A complete submersion in the double gun culture, not for the faint of heart.

Know anybody that pushes for marsh hens (rails)?

I have used several much older parkers for the ducks/geese with great success. The trouble is with the loads to shoot. They are quite expensive. If that VH is in good shape you should be able to shoot off the shelf Heavy shot classic doubles, bismuth, tungsten matrix or RST is loading the Nice Shot. They are all safe for softer steel barrels...softer than chrome-moly bores that is. The only VH I have used on ducks is a #2 frame, straight stock, 32" F/F. I also use a damascus 10bore DH and some hammer guns. If you query my name you may still be able to find some pictures that have been posted in the past. The photo of the two redheads on the website were taken from a stake blind on Saginaw Bay with the GH pictured. If you are into the big guns I am working on getting a #5 frame 10 bore ready for this coming fall. Doubt it will be ready for the early goose opener on Sept. 1st.

Good luck with the VH.

BTW you are a lucky man to be so close to such a historical hunting area. I hunt Saginaw Bay near Bay Port and occasionally on Lake St. Clair and Houghton Lake for big water and several small floodings.

Never been to Vintagers but Easton is 25 minutes from my home by car or about 45 by boat. You can count on me being there this year if its that close. There's such an abundance of ducks and geese ( river and puddle ) here that quite frankly I've never even thought about it, Rails that is. I've seen plenty though and I'm certainly not above being "schooled" on the subject.  Until now  I too have been an A-5 man , preferring a beat up old Belgium . After shoulder surgery they were pretty tough to take so I found a nice old one  with a pad. I also break out a 1959 Model 12 because it seems to have more punch for those long distance ( I call it dailing 8) shots. Probably all in my head but thats half the battle.   Marshall

Kurt, Can I buy those shells at a place like Gander Mountain.? Also  are you telling me to stay away from regular #5 or 6 modern duck loads?

I also have ( passed down) an old 8 gauge and a 10 gauge with hammers but they been in a relatives gun safe and believe it or not I haven't even looked at them in years. You can bet that by Wednesday I'll know the particulars and while be grateful for any light you might be able to shed. I remember the 10 gauge double with hammers was Damascus and wasn't that tight. It wasn't a famous name and I was told not to shoot it. This was probably 35 years ago. Still have it and now with renewed interest. Look forward to checking out the Redheads! Thanks

I dropped off the wood last weekend with Eric's buddy Edgar for some real miracle work. Probably take 3 to 4 months. He won't do the checkering so I will have to take it someplace else for that. A local gunsmith was going to make a new extractor and backed out....he has failing health....damn emphesema will do that to a person. I may take the barrels to Bachelder for the extractor and also too clean up the bores. I may have to wait on the re black and white of the damascus until next summer. I also burned up the money I had saved to do the work. Found a really nice ejector, single trigger damascus gun...that is why I have the GH 12 for sale. Damn guns can get a man in trouble.

I need to get busy making some calls. I have about 10 orders stacked up and have been busy catching up on spring projects and remodeling in the house. Not to mention the boys soccor games taking up half the day every saturday.

I made my first pilgrimage to the Vintagers last September myself. Though really I went out there with my friend Roger to shoot marsh hens down off Wachapreague, VA. We had a bang up two day shoot on those, really got into them. We're talking another trip this season though September tends to pull a man in a lot of directions. I missed the opening weekend of duck season in Ontario to make that trip and though I had an awful good time it was sure tough to do.

When you say regular #5 or #6 duck loads are you meaning steel shot? While it's usually fine in something like an A-5 or Model 12, it might be a little rough on the tight chokes in a 30 inch Parker. You can order all those different shells Kurt mentioned off the internet from various places but they ain't cheap. I've been stocking them up for several years now, buying when I could find them for a good price.

Interested to hear about your 10 gauge and 8 gauge. I'm a big bore shotgun man myself. I have a Parker magnum 10 gauge that's my steady goose gun and a couple 10 gauge 2 7/8 hammer guns that I've used for them as well. Have made a couple trips over to the UK and used my Churchill 8 gauge on the geese there. Wish they were legal here, sure a deadly long range waterfowling piece.

P.S. to Marshall: Kurt makes good calls if you're in the market.

P.S. to Kurt: You don't need that 10 gauge, you've got plenty of guns. Now me on the other hand, that's just the sort of gun I need.

Destry, I wasn't thinking steel but in hindsight thats all we can legally shot here. I guess you answered my question with a question. High dollar ammo it is I quess for my Parker.  I was hunting waterfowl almost daily (in season only)   when they made  the switch from lead to steel and although I fully understand the dangers to wildlife eating the lead shot,   for quite some time I  felt we wound up with more cripples( which is bad) because of the lack of power. That seems to have been rectified. I agree with your thoughts on what an A-5 can take. I think I could  shoot dynamite though mine.

I'll get back to you also on those big bores. You guys have peaked my interest in them so much I would  check   tonight if they weren't an hour away. Patience for me is still fleeting.

If you do come back to the Shore drinks etc. are on me!

Destry, Marshall is too much of a gentleman to tell you that many waterfowlers on the Shore bought a box of steel decades ago and still have it.  Most of those boxes are well worn from being carried out to the field and blinds for so many years.  Marshall, I live over here on the God forsaken Western Shore and will meet you at the Vintagers.  The PGCA has a large tent where we congregate and show off our Parkers.

Bill, You've said it all. I'll be there in September, look forward to meeting you. Seems for sure you understand our native feeling that "There's no life west of the Eastern Shore!".
