Ah, its springtime, the grass is growing, quail are calling and the flowers blooming, and I have a new Llewellin setter puppy.

Life is good and looking forward to this hunting season.

By the way, Charlie Herzog blasted a turkey stone cold dead in its tracks with a Parker PH 410 yesterday.  7 1/2 shot size.

Great looking pup, Bruce!  What its name? The large body spots and markings of your pup reminds me of paintings from the masters of sporting dog art such as Osthaus and Rousseau.

Triple or Trip, from my baseball playing days. My coach always thought Trip was more accurate.

A friend has a couple Osthaus paintings and those setters are dark.

Coming up to the UP or Duluth Puglisi shoots?  Nice looking damascus D grade you have.

Bruce,

The DH you are referring to is one of the Parkers I have won at The U.P. S X S Classic, the other is an early Trojan.  I've been to all da Yoopers and wouldn't miss one for anything---the best run, the best organized, the most fun and the best value of any S X S event in the country.

Well the Yooper is a good shoot but come on now Greg "the best run, the best organized, the most fun and the best value of any S X S event in the country".    Plenty of superlatives in your quote.  I guess if you win something the place you won it is the best of everything.  And just how many other S X S events have you been to Greg?  I didn't see you at the Vintage Cup last year.  Have you been to the past Addieville Parker shoots or one or more of the past 6 Great Northeasterner S X S shoots?

Well Bart, have you ever been to the Yooper?

If you have, you will agree my description is pretty accurate.  If not, what other event in the country can you get: A total 226 targets---120 "Sporting Clays targets, a 76 bird "Flurry", a 30 bird "Pigeon Ring", 2 free continental breakfasts, an open bar before the included gourmet buffet-style banquet and have an honest chance (Lewis Class) to win one of approximately $20,000 worth of S X S's plus a 1:120 chance to win a $4000-$5000 valued S X S as a door prize, all for one $325.00 entry fee?

I have been to the Vintage Cup twice--admittedly I had a great time.  One of these times a personal friend of mine won the 50-bird 20-ga. side event. His entry fee was $60 and for winning he received a silver pewter plate that he uses as an ashtray.  He celebrated winning by going over to the food tent and buying a $7.00 sandwich and a $3.00 can of coke.

I have also been to a National S X S Championship event where I won the 50 bird 28-ga. event, for my $60 entry fee and winning I received a 10" tall silver pewter cup engraved "National Side x Side Championships 28-ga. National Champion".  I proudly display this on a shelf in my basement workshop and will tell anyone who asks about it the wonderful time I had...but these shoots just don't compare to the comaraderie and good time that the U.P. Side x Side Classic offers.

I have been at the Yooper.  Just as I figured you haven't done too many places besides the yooper.  BB

Hey Bruce that looks like a hell of good grouse dog...... So I guess that you are going to be hitting the woods more, instead of the open fields (and open shots). Where did you get him from ? Very nice. Eric

Bruce: Trip is a great looking dog. The coloring is perfect. You'll be able to see her easily in the snow like my dog Huck. I'm sure she's chasing birds already.  Congratulations, Dick D.

I too have a new puppy.  One choc. lab named Kimble.  She looks like she's going to be a good one.

John;

I say you have picked the perfect name as opposed to Bogardus for a nom de plume.

Have fun with your puppy while she gets you trained in her ways.

Roger

Bill Bolyard's Llewellins did fine on pheasant and quail so I figured she could too. People do run these setters out here. She's from Houdini Kennels in SW Minnesota, prairie country and has Lynnhill and Bondhu breeding, which I'm told is good.

I've shot at Vintagers a couple times, not at the Yooper yet. Shot at a lot of places around. I'm a member of the Calif sxs society also. Can't say I'm crazy about the Vintagers course, pretty closed in and its OK but I've shot more fun out here. The most fun I've had recently was the Nebraska shoot where if you didn't hit your target there was another shooter 10 ft away who would.  And some guys were talking small bore, well I have a secret plan. I have a Colt SSA and a bunch of 45 cal shotshells, and I'm going to shoot that at close in small bore targets. That way I can out small bore the small bore boys.  That kind of fun shooting is the most enjoyable for me, and I've shot where fellows wear neckties and those knicker shorts.

John Davis, I'm glad you got another Lab. I know you missed your co pilot and you needed somebody to help drive on those long trips to the plains. I'm very happy for you.

OK Bill, but I'm sure everyone else has cute puppy and dog pictures too. Doc Van, the microchipping is a good idea and the breeder did that for me.

When she gets old enough this summer, I'll get her out in the fields for wild quail, and this summer I'll shoot some pen raised quail over her, then this fall it will be a steady run of wild birds; huns, prairie grouse, woods grouse, pheasant, skunk and chipmunks in the yard.
