No - I have no plans to shoot anything "hot" in my 10 gauge EH (# 3 frame), but I do want to buy some non-toxic loads for waterfowl.
My only real option seems to be the NiceShot loads from RST. Their standard 1 1/8 ounce 10 gauge load generates 5500 psi, while the 1 1/4 ounce load will make 6500 psi. Reasonable pressures - I'd assume.
Their 10 gauge 1 1/4 ounce Nice Shot load generates 7300 psi.
The question is this: What's a reasonable maximum pressure that you damascus shooters like to stay under ?
Thanks !
PS: Does ANYONE know what pressures black powder (B.P.) loads generate ? I have never seen any specifics on this, so it's hard for me to "compare" typical B.P. pressures to low-pressure smokeless ones.
Thanks again !
John

You shouldn't have any trouble with any of those loads, if your barrels are in good condition. Most consider 7600 PSI to 8000 PSI the "normal maximum" range for Damascus loads. Last edited on Mon Apr 6th, 2009 01:32 pm by Dave Miles

I agree with Dave but I shot 3 1/2" factory 10g magnum loads in a re-chambered D2 #4 frame 10 gauge for years without a whimper but do as Dave says (not as I do!) The RST Niceshot 1 1/4oz load is a nice replication of a classic 10g pigeon or waterfowl load circa 1900.

John,
Be sure and ask the RST boys about their new 1 3/8 ounce 10 gauge NiceShot load. They haven't cataloged it yet but they've got them tested and available. I've got some I'm going to hopefully try on snow geese here pretty quick. I used their 1 1/4 load on geese with great effect, these 1 3/8 shells should really do the work at even longer ranges.

Thanks Destry - I'll do that !
I just got my first case of RST's Falcon Ultralite 12 ga. shells (with the 3/4 ouce shot charge - # 8 shot).
I can't wait to bust some clays and hopefully this fall - knock down a mess of doves...
I'll never totally stop using Black powder shells in this old 12 gauge hammer gun I have - but it will be nice now to have a smokeless option !

BP shotgun loads are in the 4-7000PSI range. Maybe a hot one would get close to 8000. Paul

Paul probably means black powder rather than the actual B&P cartridge company.

In my Lyman Blackpowder Handbook the highest pressure shown for 20 or 12ga is 6950 LUP. This would be somewhere around 8000 PSI. Most loads were about 4500 to 5500 LUP, or a thousand higher for PSI. It doesn't show 10ga loads but they should be no different. Paul

Thanks, Paul !
I test-fired my new Parker EH yesterday.
Wow ! That 10 gauge sure does kick ! ( 4 1/4 drams black powder & 1 1/4 ounces of shot) ...sure woke me up !!!!
I'd love to try some of the 1 1/8 ounce RST smokeless 10's - I bet they'd be more friendly to my shoulder & cheek.
(My concern for pressures was over the RST NiceShot 10 load - at 7300 psi. But I guess I shouldn't be concerned.)
Anybody try these loads on geese ? Is # 2 NiceShot big enough ? (I used to shoot BB in bismuth years ago...)

John, you can compare Nice Shot to lead. I find it to be about 96% by volume to lead, close enough. I had a lot of success using #4's on geese this year, works for both ducks and geese. Bob

#2 Niceshot is plenty of medicine for geese, that's what I was using in the RST shells this past season and it killed them just fine.

Thanks guys !
I'll have to get some soon !
I assume that the # 4's were used for decoying geese and the # 2's were for pass shooting ? I can never seem to get them too close, so I'd want a load that'll be good for pass shooting...

I shot a factory 3 1/2 in my rechambered double without a buttpad and it was most painful brutal event of the year.!

Those hot 3 1/2" shells are made for recoil reducing automatics! About like having your gun double on you.! I recently had my GH double with AA 1 1/4 oz game loads and it broke my glasses and moved me back five or six feet.
It has been repaired but I look at the gun with something amounting to fear. DavidLast edited on Wed Apr 8th, 2009 03:14 pm by David Hamilton

For decoying I used to shoot #4 in the early season then go to #2 later on when they've got their winter fat and full set of cold weather feathers on. Thought the past couple years (in the magnum) I've been using the Federal Tungsten Polymer shells and the largest you could get is #4. They seem to do the job just fine but I'm careful not to try and real long shots late in the year when the birds are so much tougher. If I could get #2 I'd really feel a lot more comfortable with those during the latter part of the season.
When I've had the hammer gun out I've only used the RST NiceShot loads in #2 and they've been absolutely great. I can't wait to try these new 1 3/8 loads they're making now.
I've had my 10 gauge magnum double discharge on me a couple times with 2 1/4 ounce loads in both barrels. It will definitely get your attention, have no doubt of that. Hopefully that problem is fixed now......

Once I still killed the goose I was shooting at believe it or now. It did make me step back a step or two, being a bigger guy probably helped.
