Yep - I actually did a search - and spent about 4 or 5 hours on "revdocdrew" awesome site at:

http://www.damascusknowledge.com-a.googlepages.com/home

But - the answer still eludes me (which is easy to do?) ;)

Anyway - I picked up a stunning 26" 20GA Damascus Parker recently - and the barrels are simply outstanding.  Is there any secret to protecting the color/pattern on these?  I did find a picture on revdocdrew's site of a similiar "D" grade Dam, but mine are in similiar - or better condition?  I just want to protect them as best I can from handling or field wear?

My thanks in advance!

John

Lots of wax, John, it what is recommended by Dale Edmonds. He like Bri-Wax but Johnson's floor wax works too. Bri Wax is clearest.

Galazan sells a lacquer brush on stuff like clear nail polish that works OK also. Clear nail polish may be less costly.

What grade gun? G?  I have that C grade 20ga damascus and CH has another. Not too many around. There was one sold at the recent Nebraska auction with incorrect wood.  Seen a few D grade 20ga damascus guns, but uncommon there also. The book says only a few G grade damascus 20's but I think there are a lot more than that based upon recent observations.

Thanks Bruce!!  I'll give the wax a try..!  Do you know - if I handle/shoot the gun - will it protect it from discoloration?  Also - should I remove it before storing it?

Ummm  - the nail polish I might haft'a skip?? ("...Ummm Sir - are you SURE you want to purchase 10 bottles of nail polish??.." ;) )

Bruce - my thanks again!!!

No, just leave it on and refresh it periodically and particularly before wet conditions. It wears off and you put more on, just like a Porsche. or SAAB in my situation. ( I was in Calif last week and saw lots of nice 911's. Makes one start to think.  )

I use my GHE 12ga Damascus in all kinds of miserable conditions, rain, duck hunting, snow, holds up fine. Not to worry. The C grade Damascus 20ga I'm more careful with because it is rare and increasingly valuable.

Here is my C 20ga Damascus. the pattern on this one is about the same as G grades. I don't see that's its any finer than G grade Damascus.

John,My BH that Dr.Gaddy refinished the barrels on still has the clear laquer that he applied on them.I think it has been discussed here before what type he used.

A word of caution from Dale who had reminded me that most car wax has abrasives/cleaners in it. He recommended paste wax without abrasives for guns. So no Meguiers or Blue Coral.

A spray on lacquer might even work well. But some don't like to have a finish on the barrels.

Oh oh oh..  Nice gun. Nice gun. Welcome in. There are not that many 20ga damascus guns around and your's is definitely nice.

You don't want to be whacking down brush with that.

All three of these little 20ga's look unmolested and have skeleton butt plates. That's increasingly rare among nice Parkers when so many folks promptly send them off to be re case colored.

Don't do what I did. I have real nice 12ga GHE damascus and Dale had just refinished the barrels. I took it to the duck blind, slipped getting in and whacked the barrels on the steel rim of the blind. Didn't leave much of a dent, but its  still visible after being taken out and I know its there. Watch the car doors.

My thanks again Bruce!!!  Mine's definately not a "brush whacker" - but - I've been known to go through some hazardous conditions with my Parkers (ask me about duck hunting last week my my GH!!!! :)  ) As well - I don't believe mine is molested either?  It could be - as this one was built in January of 1899 (according to the Parker Story) - but it appears "right as rain" to me?  I dun'no?  She is just a sweetheart...  A D grade 20ga w/26" tubes and wonderful wood...

To Dave & Scott - my thanks!!!  Actually, Scott - you can not only see her - I'll invite you to shoot her.  I need to get some rounds from RST or someone that I feel OK about?  The bores are perfect (no rust, pitting, etc..?).

Guys???

My sincerest thanks again!

John

John, must of my guns are Damascus. I use the same wax on the wood as I do the barrels. It's called Renaissance Wax.

http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1304

But any good paste wax will work. Beautiful gun by the way.

If you reload, save the RST, 20 gauge hulls. I have a good low pressure load using those hulls. If you don't reload, save the hulls anyways, and I'll buy them from you. I too have a GH, 20 gauge, with 28" Damascus barrels.

Regards, Dave

I agree on it being very important that the wax needs to be non abrasive, and many waxes have abrasives in them so be cautious. I use an Armorall car wax that says specifically that it is non abrasive and it seems to work great. I have to wax my ghe with it before I take it to Michigan next month. My 10ga bbls came from Dale E waxed and it seems to be a semi gloss type wax whatever it is. The Armorall is a bit more glossy and whatever Puglisis puts on his guns for sale is much more glossy. Any wax with carnuba in it should put on a very hard and long lasting protective finish. I think Johnsons paste wax is carnuba based...

Gawd, what a gorgeous 20ga!!! Impressive. Jeff's Outfitters carries a nice toe-under compact case that works great on Parker 20's if you want a different case.

Dave,

Outstanding - THANK YOU!!!  While I reload 20GA (and 28/410) - all my receipes are for standard pressures - and all my RSTs for my older 12GA Parkers.

I never saved their hulls from the 12GA - but, I will for the 20..  Either I'll send them to you (no charge) or pay you for reloading them to your fomula?

Dave - my sincerest thanks again.....

Also - I have two PMs in the past ten minutes...???  Yes - The Parker Story DOES list the date of manufacture on this D grade.  Look at page 616..  The serial number is listed as is the date of manufacture.  And no the seller didn't know that - and either did I when I "did this deal" ('till I call another well known friend/collector - and he was "you done good, Johnny..").  To me - and to the retail store - this was simply a "D" grade 20GA..

I should have played the lottery that day, I guess??

Dave - my thanks again..!!!

John

You need a period case....like a A&F vc case. Let me know if you need a source. Costly, but I suspect the gun was also. Its shocking what these things are bringing on the public market....more or equal to the nice fluid steel ones for sure.

I've shot the 7/8 oz Federals from mine, but in those early years and light guns they were set up for 3/4oz. I've been loading lower velocity 3/4 and 7/8oz loads and they feel right in the gun. I've been using the Parker recommendations in the Small Bore Shot Guns  brochure.

Hi Richard..!!!

You must have been posting while I was posting!!  :)  Anyway - I acutually DO HAVE some Armorall wax that you are referring to (for my rear-engined cars (hey Bruce ;) )) - and yep - it does say "non-abrasive"..  As first pass - I'll give that a try - and with my thanks!!

As for a toe under case..  THANK YOU!!!  I'm look for actually three of them for various small-bore Parkers I have.  Great lead - thanks!

BTW?  Richard??  I also want to take a moment to thank you in public for your great pics you post in this Forum.  Many of them made the PGCA video presentation..  Just my thanks for that....

John
