I raided a gunshop ammo stockpile while in Anchorage again. I bought the 28ga brass shells; the rest are just on loan to share here. Attached Image (viewed 1197 times):

Interesting English shotshells. The coolest is the Kynoch 20ga with the Westley Richards bullet. Looks pretty nasty to me. Attached Image (viewed 1194 times):

Some .410 shells showing the aluminum shells that are I think US military survival ammo issued to pilots who carried the Savage O/U .22/shotguns in their planes. Anyone know for certain? I have a test pilot friend up here who still has one he carried around Alaska in WWII as he tested P-38's and P-51's on skis. Attached Image (viewed 1164 times):

What a great find! Congrats. They all look good and would be nice additions to someone's collection. I was thinking though..... brass gets hard up there in the cold; perhaps you should send those 28s to me here in the warm Southwest.

Thanks Greg, but I think it's far too hot for such shells in Arizona; I hear they don't like the sun....
The 28ga brass shells were a real surprise to me; I thought I had rummaged through the pile pretty well the first time but I missed these. I've never seen a brass 28ga shell before these. I got 5 boxes of old paper Winchester and Remington 28ga shells in 6 and 7-1/2 shot from the pile too. They'll be my hunting rounds for some time. There's something satisfying in using old paper shells when chasing ruffed grouse.

RogerCoger and I made the run over to the Ohio Decoy Collectors show today. I wasn't in the market for vintage decoys really, but I did visit with Tom Humberstone about some cork birds to add to my sneaking/sinkbox rig.
Didn't buy much but did run onto a few paper shells that I was pleased with. Four different brush/scatter/thicket loads in 12 and 16 gauge and the real prize was a Remington Kleanbore 32 gauge shell factory loaded with #4 shot. Only the second factory loaded 32 I've ever seen and I own the other one. And the real beauty of the deal is it all only cost me $20. Much cheaper than wood decoys or Parker shotguns and just as much fun in my eyes.
I was looking over my shell collection after my recent trade with Mr. Flanders for a 2 7/8 28 gauge and realized that all my other paper 28 gauge stuff is 2 3/4. Anybody got a factory loaded 2 1/2 inch 28 gauge they'll trade?
I also need paper (American Made) factory loaded 2 inch and 2 1/2 inch 12 gauge. I know they exist but I've never had a chance to pick either one up. And a paper, factory loaded, (American) 14 gauge is a need as well. I've got good stuff to trade!!!!
Saw a full box of paper 14 gauge Winchesters today but they guy didn't want to break them up of course and I don't need a whole box. Also saw a full box of Remington Arrow 8 gauge shells but the box had tape all over it and he wanted an arm and a leg anyway.

Destry: I hope I get to see your shell collection at some point. I've never seen a 14ga or a 32ga shell. As for the 2-7/8" 28ga shells, the shop collection I was rummaging in has an entire wooden case of unopened full boxes of those. I had intended to buy the whole case but wasn't sure of the pressure difference when shooting them in a 2-3/4" gun. I wouldn't worry in a 12ga but 28 ga pressures are high enough as is without adding that. Maybe it would be fine; I just don't know and that case wouldn't be cheap. It's all #6 shot also, and I would prefer 8shot unless I used it more for pheasants, which I suppose I could FORCE myself to do if I HAD to.

Steve,
Let me know, I've got good stuff to trade like I said.
As far as the sleeping goes, I work nights bouncing in a bar so I get off work in the wee hours. I'm usually not ready to go straight to bed so I mess around on the computer for a bit till I get sleepy.

I recently rediscovered a bag of 100 or so, never used, primed 2 1/2" sixteen gauge shells I bought in a yard sale in Maine some years ago. about 1/3 are Peters Ideal with a one-inch long brass base and the rest are low brass US Climax cases

Speaking of reloading components, today I inherited about 1000 old Federal "champion" plastic shotcups and about 35# of very old #8shot(!)from a friend cleaning out his garage. I happen to have several boxes of the old Federal Champion paper target loads still in the boxes. Does anyone know if these loads use these plastic shot cups? If so, does anyone have any old loading manuals that would give me recipes I could use??? I have far more than I can likely ever use; if anyone else can use some of these shotcups, speak now and I'll ship you a bag...

Steve,
I have a day job as the manager of an auction house as well. I just work the bouncing gig for extra money as auction managing don't pay all the bills.

Could I pose a question to you shotshell collectors? Was there ever an 18 gauge shotshell? I know there were 14 gauges, in fact, didn't Winchester experiment with a 14 gauge in the 60's or 70's and then abandon the project?

Yes, there is an 18 gauge shell and I have one in my collection that's American made. It's a little short thing, about 2 inches long. The only one I've ever had a chance to pick up. I've never seen or heard of a gun for one though.
The only 14 gauge shell I have is an all aluminum Winchester that is an experimental shell from that time. The guy I got it from years ago said they made a few experimental Model 12's for the shells but I've never seen one of those either.

Thanks Destry. I recall reading an article about the Winchester 14 gauge but can't remember where---I searched SSM but couldn't find it---does anyone happen to recall it?

My dad used to have an old Parker hammer gun that was, as he called it "a loose 16". When he passed away several years, it was not among the several guns he had. I'll bet it was a 14 ga. Last edited on Tue Mar 20th, 2007 03:05 am by Bill Frech
