What is the purpose of the screw in the forend Dean?

That screw is a reinforcing rod that threads into the front of the forend iron. That, coupled with the one-piece forend loop are designed to prevent recoil damage when gripping the forend and due to the additional weight of the larger forend as well.

An original Parker beavertail forend will always have it while some aftermarket beavertails on Parkers may not.
