I'm new to the website. I am looking for information about restoring an old parker i inherited. It hasn't been treated properly in the past and i want to bring it back to it's original beauty and glory. It's an 1892 hammerless sidebyside with twist barrels. The gun has been wet sometime in the past and is rusted. The action of the gun doen't work due to the rust and i haven't tried to force it or take it apart. Any help on the route i should take or person to contact about restoation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you say the action doesn't work, am I to take it that it won't break open so you can see the chambers. If this is the case please be very careful when handleing this gun as it may be loaded. Even if the shells are old they may still be able to discharge.

Please treat this like a loaded gun if you can't break it open!

Spray the action, forend lever and the top lever with a good penetrating oil and let it sit for a day then spray it again. If you can stand it just let it sit one more day. Try the top lever and see it it will push to the right. If the top lever does not move give the left side of the lever a tap with a small plastic hammer. Go slow and try not to do something that can't be undone.

I live in east texas about 60 miles south west of shreveport La., small town called huxley.
I got the gun in two pieces. I have started with the penatrating oil and a rag to try and wipe off some of the rust and stop any more damage. I have talked to a couple of gunsmiths in the area and they said that is what i should start doing. the top lever is rusted and doesn't move along with the safety switch and triggers.

The Parker needs to be taken apart and cleaned. Are you up to it or would you rather have a gunsmith do it?

Hi Mark,

If you are going to disassemble your Parker please ensure that you have hollow ground screwdrivers that percisely fit each screw's slot. Otherwise you will damage your gun.

I use a set from Brownells with the additional set of English fine slot bits. The total cost of the Brownells gunsmith screwdriver set and optional English bits was over $100 but worth it.
