A great family heirloom but you know it’s gonna be a money pit.
Now it can hang on your wall as a great conversation piece. But oh, the stories it could tell ! .

You’re a lucky guy to have that family heirloom. We had a similar top action hammer gun in the family that belonged to my great great grandfather who lived in Bristol, Ct and fought in the Civil War. It was dark, dirty and heavy and it had a broken hammer. When I was a kid I was fascinated by it. Sadly my uncle scrapped it in the 1970s, convinced the Damascus barrels were unsafe. Oh how I wish we still had that gun.

Have someone evaluate the bores, some one knowledgable about vintage guns. They may not be as bad as you think. The exterior is not all that bad.

Thanks, any suggestions on cleaning it up a bit? Maybe getting the dark spots out so the engraving shows a little better? Is it ok to use a soft brass brush and some oil? Or should I just leave it?
