Default What powder to reload 410 ga shot shells?

What is the preferred powder for 410 ga reloading? I have 20/28, will that work?

Hi Allen,

There are a handful of good powders out there, I am not sure about 20/28 in a 410.

I have used H-110 in the past and Alliant 410(which I am using now and like). Lil Gun is also another powder, but I have not used it.

Most places stocked Alliant 410 during COVID so I built up my loads from using that powder. I like it and recommend it...

Edit: Great minds think alike Ken...we must have been typing at the same time

I used to load 2400 in 3" Federal papers with 3/4 oz shot and really liked it. Poor crimp, and had to candle drip a few per box, but they were the ticket back in the day. The load has taken everything from geese(double) on down to Wilson's snipe. Now, too hand feeble to reload 410's and back isn't happy cleaning up the all too frequent messes, so I am living off of the remains of a 'case' of 3" 7 1/2 Federal papers. A friend has offered to load me some #8's for quail and grouse, so I should be good to go, as I just rolled into my 83rd year of life Saturday, and wonder when I will finally have to quit???, doesn't appear to be on the horizon yet, the Big Guy willing.

I'm only 76 but still enjoy loading and shooting the .410. I have a large paper punch and make over shot cards for ragged crimps. There is little more fun then the satisfaction of smoking clays with a .410.

I’ve been loading 410’s with WIN 296 for over forty years . FWIW 296 and H-110 are the same thing . I tried 2400 and it was okay , never tried IMR 4227 but many like it . Alliant 410 is supposed to be pretty good , I had some that came with a 410 loader I bought . But I never tried it .

I have loaded 296 and 2400 for over fifty years. My 296 supply will last a lifetime. No reason to change.

Does anyone have a recipe for Lil Gun in 3" hulls with 3/4oz shot?? I have 100+ blue/green Remington 3" m/ts, and they have the biggest volume. I machined up a die that resizes the #57 Primer to a #209 size. And I just got some of the 'Stump' wads and have a 4 pounder of Lil Gun. I have an old published recipe that states 15gr 2400, any wad, any std primer, with 3/4oz, which is what I used to load in my Fed papers with 16gr. Does anyone have an old bag of Fed 3" paper M/Ts that they would be willing to part with as I still have a few pounds of 2400?? Mom unhappy, as I manage to dump about as many as get loaded. I am loading one at a time, resize and prime a few dozen, then drop into each one with my old Hollywood powder measure, put a wad in and tamp with a cu rod, and then the fun begins, when I weigh shot and dump in, then it is off to the precrimp and then the final crimp. Good thing I only shoot a few dozen or less on a dove outing. Thank You!

I am using the same heavy powder charge of 296 that I have used for my 2 1/2" shells. It is heavier (15 grains) than recommended but has worked for me forever. The pressure is probably even higher in a 3" 11/16 ounce load but I don't think it's over the top for pressure. Look in the Winchester loading manual.
