Still Too Early for Northern Migration

I took this picture today on the Shawsheen Flats here in Andover Ma. That is not open water on the river - it is about a foot of solid ice.

This mated pair of swans flew out from these flats in early December, just before the stillwater began to ice up and now, here they are again but they have a long wait for nesting season.

NE North Carolina and SE Virginia around Currituck Sound and Back Bay is full of Swans right now. (First of March) Saw multiple flocks of thousands in fields coming back from shooting Sporting Clays in Sligo NC yesterday

I don't keep list but will drive some distance to see what I like to see. Canvasbacks for example. Down in Texas recently took the Grand kids 4 & 6 to a good spot to see Blue Geese coming in at twilight. They were bowled over by sitting in the middle of thousands of birds coming in off Galveston Bay. Bigger hit than video games. Found the spot off the EBird web site

On my way back from Louisville today I saw some huge flocks of Sandhill Cranes about 35 miles north of Louisville. If they are smart, they will stay there for a while! I drove in freezing rain for the first 50 after leaving the gun show.
