Default Ptarmigan NL season ended today

It's been good, but life gets in the way as usual, old Ben is gone lame ,so it's Moses turn at the reigns now ...I've had so many dogs over the years ... how many more will get thier turn I wonder ?
It was just my son Jack and setter Moses on this cool overcast day ,Moses hunted bumper to bumper and never missed a beat finding three singles and two sets of 3 for a total nine birds ,Jack had a great opportunity but shit the bed 🤣 I got one chance and made it count with my recently acquired and restored Hollis .
Couldent ask for a better day to be out with my boy ,and to see his enthusiasm over the dog and country tells me there be another generation of Dawe men traipsing the Barrens for years to come

Beautiful! 67 degrees here and too hot to hunt. I’d love to have traipsed along just to watch. Thanks for taking me through your photos. I hope you get many more hunts…and good companions.

Ever since I went caribou hunting I have wanted to try ptarmigan. These pictures are great. I’ll get there some day. Do they hold well for the dog? What are they like as table fare?

Thx
Rick

They hold well early in the season, or depending how remote they are and how much pressure ,these were very wild birds ...they're not the best eating, grew up eating them there's better birds to eat

Having hunted the barrens in good weather it was tough. I can't imagine hunting in this weather.
Jack definitely has grown. Chris you are a lucky man to have raised a young man that will bear this weather and go hunting with the old man.
Wonderful photos.

How many miles per bird Chris??? There were many of them around when I moose hunted in the west, and not very spooky, I wished I had a shotgun. Thanks for sharing.
