I have two Ansley H. Fox doubles with serial numbers 14 digits apart. One shipped in 1914 and the other in 1918. I have photocopies of the sheets Roe Clark used to count the Ansley H. Fox graded 20-gauges for McIntosh's book. There were 50 serial numbers per page. While most of the sheets have shipping dates that cover three or four years, one has shipping dates from 1928 to 1940. Pricey smallbores weren't moving very fast during the Great Depression.

Browning had a similar situation, with gun manufacture and sale years apart. Parker had guns out in the trade for long periods of time and then took them back when they did not sell.

Manufacturers of many products try to maintain there workforce through seasonal demand. It makes no sense to focus on inventory when demand is high and firm orders generate revenue. Inventory keeps the skilled craftsmen intact during soft demand.

Not to hijack the thread - but Henry Bishop must have been a man of some prominence. I have seen both a B and a small bore AA he owned.

Right Josh. He was indeed a man of some prominence in Bridgeport especially but was well known in New York as well.
I have written an article about him and this little DHE and have a few pictures of the AAHE two-gauge two-barrel set (20/28) that I have permission from the owner to use in my article. Bishop actually ordered this DHE for his wife Jessie. Ihave not seen the BH nor pictures either but I know of it’s existence because he makes reference to it in ordering the engraving on his AAHE. The gun is on the 0-frame as the 00-frame Parkers had not been introduced yet. .
