I assume that Mr Copper meant ruffed grouse but there are other grouse species.
Here are Sharptail grouse on one of my old guns. Back in the 1880’s through the 1910’s sportsmen would ride the trains out from the east to the towns along the railroad lines out here. They would be met by farmers on buckboards or Model T’s and taken out to the prairies to hunt grouse . In Nebraska along the Platte or Kansas along the Kaw , Republican, Solomon , or Arkansas they would hunt ducks in the morning and prairie grouse in the afternoon . The old illustrations of this in the sportsmen’s journals of the time are interesting. The practice continues. |
