Default OT: Bore Obstruction to Destruction

This is off topic because it doesn't involve Parkers.

With that said: I feel it's something we are all probably interested in judging by the amount of discussions here over the years about barrel failures & their causes.

Please keep in mind this is in no way shape or form scientific experimenting and no firm conclusions should be made from it, but it is a bit of an eye-opener never the less & should spark some thought & discussion. I just found it interesting with me being a dyed in the wool shotgun guy who loves shooting these old guns.

I think, if one will refer back to Double Gun Journal there was a series of attempts to blow up Damascus barrels with various loads including modern proof loads.

Their findings/results were quite interesting.

Right, Sherman Bell's tests, though not scientific at all, were a whole lot more scientific than these guys who just wanted to "blow some stuff up."

I studied a lot of statistics in Grad school, but must admit I don't remember how to calculate how many Sherman bell tests it would take to be scientifically significant

A study by the Royal Military College of Science, sponsored by the Birmingham Proof House and the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, showed that an obstruction by 2 fibre wads (total weight of 4 grams) was sufficient to bulge or burst a 12 gauge barrel shooting a 28 gram (slightly less than 1 ounce) load. Peak pressure occurred 22mm (.866”) past the leading edge of the obstruction.

OTOH Greener attempted to burst barrels with various obstructions, and the obstructing materials were just ejected out the end of the barrel.

The Double Gun & Single Shot Journal Vol 18, Issue 1, Spring 2007 “Finding Out For Myself” series by Sherman Bell described his attempts to burst barrels with various obstructions, including a 20g shell.
