An 8 gauge just for Charlie

Charlie, I was recently re-reading my 1952 Stoeger's Shooter's Bible and I came across the section on Greener's hammerless ejector guns. They have (in 1952) of course, an 8 gauge ejector model F35 Far Killer for only 173 pounds, 4 shillings, 0 pence. Using their conversion as shown in the same ad, the price in dollars would be $1,384. Since I have never seen an 8 gauge ejector gun, I think you should invent a time machine and go back and buy it. That way I could cross off another item on my bucket list. Have a great day.

In 1952, I was another twelve years out from arriving on the scene. Being a newborn then, I had nothing aside from some milk and the occasional diaper. $1300 dollars would've been completely out of the question! Now, if we could only figure out how to buy an 8 gauge for that price now that I'm all grown up and have a real job...

thereare a few 8 ga s seen out there for less than 1300 but more than likely they wont be a parker... but heh 3 of my 8 ga s cost less than 1300 with change to spare they aint pretty but they will shoot...single barrel 8 ga are out there for less....charlie

Bill and Charlie, in the premier edition of Guns and Ammo magazine in the early fifties, there was a story about Robert Stack's purchase of his new Purdey. The price was about $1280. Times change. Shooter's Bible shows many prices of English guns in the late 40s and early to mid 50s. Charlie, if you outlive me, I will instruct Linda to ship my 14 pound eight gauge Greener Royal to your address. It is nitro proofed for 3 3/4" shells. I have never tried a stick of dynamite in it to see if it chambers.

Bill, I could not figure out the advertised conversion of pounds to dollars. The way the ad was written, showing both amounts, it was like the pound was worth $8. That could not have been right as the pound was only worth around $5 prior to WW 11, and dropped significantly after the war. I think the dollar price factored in shipping, duty, and the 11 percent excise tax.

bill i sure appreciate this offer i hope you live to a hundred and me to 101...is this greener a hammer or hammerless gun..at 14 lbs she should handle a stick of dynamite pretty well..back in the early 60 s i use to read the shotgun news it had all those 8 ga and 4 ga for sale in it... in the 50 s 1200 dollars was quite a sum of money...in 1947 my dad and his brother bought the farm we live on now for 2000 dollars there is 152 acres on this place....charlie

Charlie, the Greener Royal 8 is a minty hammer gun, unengraved, a near twin to Ben Wise's 12 gauge unengraved Royal that his Dad, Bill Wise, wrote about in Double Gun Journal a few years ago.
