1927 16ga. VH - Re-Cased by Bachelders
My grandfather purchased this 16 ga VH (frame 1, 28 inch barrels) in downtown Boston in 1927. A few years later while shooting hand trap on the family's second home in Bow, New Hampshire the recoil from the gun caused his thumb to strike his nose. He went home to Dedham, Mass with a headache and was dead the following morning from a cerebral hemmorage. Instead of his nose bleeding out, it bled inside unknowingly. My Dad inherited the 16 and hunted with it for years until his untimely death from ALS. I inherited the 16. About 8 years ago, I decided to have this 16 rebuilt as the stock was very punky and frankly had far too much drop for me. I took it to Delgrego A year later I received the gun back but within about 6 months I noticed that the case colors on the base plate had virtually washed out. (I didn't know much then about the case color process and since learned that Delgrego used the cyanide process. Needless to say I was not pleased. So, last February I shipped the 16 out to Bachelders to have it totally bone charcoal re-cased. The gun came back yesterday and I am enclosing pics of the frame. This is the work of Parker Bachelder, Brad's son. I am very pleased with the results. This is my legacy double and will go to my second cousin, Tom Newell, in Utah when I pass on.
