Default Oklahoma Winds and Quail

40 mph winds and lots of quail. They turn with the wind and are gone . A great time as usual . Tom Wooden , Mike Franzen, Russ Lindsay and me.

Mike Franzen finishing a plate of calf fries .

A pair of 24 “ guns , 12 and 20 ga.

Dogs too tired to eat.

TPS has a list of 24” guns. There are not many . Some like them , others do not . They do best when you need to swing fast and are in heavy brush.

That sounds like the daily condition. If they are factory they must balance correctly.

Both guns are are factory correct barrels. TPS indicates one 24” 12 gauge being manufactured. The one pictured is 30,000 serial numbers earlier and surfaced just a few years ago. It’s a VH, 1 frame, made in 1903 choked IC and LM. The other gun is a beautiful DH 20 gauge that belongs to Bruce. He can tell you more about it but it’s a straight quail killer in his hands.
PS … I’m not entirely sure what calf fries are but they taste really good.

I’ve seen the good Mr. Franzen’s short barreled gun and it’s a beauty…and will kill quail.

This is one of my favorite photos from some years ago . New Lewellin setter pup Fielder , almost 6 months old, first quail hunt , first day . Stop the truck to get the guns out, let the dogs out, the pup goes on point and holds . Can’t be , she doesn’t know what she is doing but Bert backs hard.

Step up and a big covey flushes.

A fabulous memory-pic Bruce!

My Gracie did the very same thing at 5 months on a VT grouse... and she retrieved it!
