One more thing, I've recorded the Ilion grip caps on 1-frame and larger, but I've yet to see anything but Meriden grip caps on 0-frames and smaller.

My grandson, Cam's, VH 20 gauge on the 0-frame, No. 228145 was sent to Remington to be refurbished in the 1960's and got a new butt stock and grip cap then.
Anyway, I presume they did not send it off to DelGrego to do the work. The whole thing was facilitated by Orvis in Manchester, VT. .

I mistyped in my post. The XJ on my 16-gauge should be X = December J = 1940. The date code with no number after it I take as the production date for the barrels. With a number, usually 3, after it is a repair code.

Hmmm… more cause for confusion…
J could be either 1940 or 1962… Thoughts on this?? .

Without the 3 suffix Frank, those are dates of manufacture of the gun. .

Thank you Dean and Dave for your replies. The gun I saw with the heart stamp also had a sunburst stamp, but didn’t have a suffix with the date code. Thus I’m assuming the date code indicates completion of the gun or barrels.
