Gary: I too am sorry for your loss. It's a pity that they can't live as long as us. Here is a poem that I hope will help. It is called......

THE LAST BATTLE

" If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For This, the last battle can't be won.
You will be and I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where my needs they'll tend,
Only stay with me until the end,
An hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree,
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail it's last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't greive that it must be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close, we two, these years.
Don't let your heart hold any tears."

Thank's To all that have posted, This is the only forum anywhere that would have the folks that understand this kind of loss! George when I first read the poem this morning I could not help but shed a few more tears and then there was a sort of comfort, I know you know what I mean, Megan and I will read it many times in the days to come, happy in the fact that Mattie is looking down watching over us. Thank you very much for these words of comfort Gary and Megan Carmichael

Gary I'm so very sorry for your loss and I know what your going through. Your act is the last gift of kindness that we can do for our canine companions. The unconditional love they give us each and every day deserves no less. It is one of the hardest decisions we make as it should be but it hurts nonthe less. Mattie will live in your hearts forever.

We are sorry for your loss and our prayers are with your family and Mattie.

Gary & Megan, you have the prayers of my family. Thank you for sharing your pain and sorrow with us. I have had to take that trip myself a couple of times. Thank the Lord we seem to forget this part when we get the next one and do it all over again. We say never again, but pretty soon, here we go again.
God bless .

Gary: I do feel your pain---it is very difficult losing a best friend and constant companion. I had to put my 14 year old Lab Tess down three weeks ago----it's so hard. Just remember the good times with her. Very sorry.

As others have said, words just fail. The hardest part of having a dog is when the time comes for them to go.
