Update on the 4 frame D. I bought it for $1860. The hinge and bolt need to be welded and fitted, $450. From Turnbull. The hammer screws need to be replaced and engraved $110. I added timberlux to the wood to seal up the wood. So I have $2420. In the gun. Not great but OK for what it is. Putting more money into it would be a waste in my opinion. Lightly recuting the checkering and re doing the barrels would cost another $600 to $800. So then I would be i
nto the gun for 3k to 3.2k. To much in my opinion but what say you?

Ignore my comment, as when I fall in love with a gun, I don't compute the add-ons, BUT...I'd make it like I like it and hang the dollar issues if I can afford them. Make it meet your desires, and keep it. Whoever you leave it to can deal with the cost-value issues.

The gun is something that you were looking for, and you are making it fully functional so you can enjoy it.
Given what the gun is, any further cosmetic work would not be a wise investment.

So you've gotten the pragmatic and poetic sides of this. It will be interesting to see where you go. I don't think you can make a poor decision on that fine gun.
