Don, tell us about your .470 NE. Any history in this gun? Thanks.

Dean, I have never seen a Nitro Express cartridge chambered in a bolt action.

Not being a "dangerous game" guy I allowed my ignorance to show...

Secret message for Dean. .500 Jeffrey is considered a Nitro Express and was originally the .500 Schuler, a cartridge designed for the Schuler "Jumbo", a really big bolt gun. One of our gun club members used a .500 Jumbo for years and his widow offered it for sale a few years ago. It is a $15,000 gun and we (meaning I) had no idea what it was and let it be swept up by a Left Coast dealer. What the heck, someone has probably chambered a bolt gun for the .470 NE at some time or other.

As far as big game rifles go, my current one is just a Chapuis Brousse in .470NE. I have owned John Wilkes in .470NE and .375 H&H Flanged, a Coggie in .375 H&H Flanged, a lovely Westley Richards PH in .500/.465 and another Chapuis in .30/06. I also currently have a .458 Lott, a .404 Jeffery and a .375 H&H in Winchester M70 left hand CRF rifles. I used a LH M70 in .470 Capstick for couple of safaris but getting the ammo was a PITA. My rule now is-if Cheaper than Dirt doesn't sell the ammo, I don't buy the rifle...although if I found a good deal on a British double in .475 No.2..well...

My long time PH for many years carries a .470NE Chapuis or a magnum Mauser actioned.505 Gibbs depending on the hunt and terrain. I figure if a Chapuis is good enough for him...

I know just how you fellows feel about hard to find ammo. Here's my big game rifle, well, if you count woodchucks as big game. Its a 25-20 and I have to order the ammo because Jake's Hardware down the street doesn't carry it.
