I was aware of this being standard treatment on the Skeet models, but not on regular G's.

Larry and all - it may still be speculative. In speaking with Mark it is probably inconclusive but checkered butts often appear on guns with the "no butt" notation.
I believe Mark has found no conclusive evidence of this.

The standard butt treatment on the Grade 2 hammerless was the hard rubber 'dog's head buttplate'.

Dean, can you give us examples of guns with factory appearing checkered butts that have corresponding PGCA letters that specify "no butt"?

My wife says I have "no butt". However, I think we are speaking of something different here. lol.

Dean/Bill,
The reason for my curiosity is that I have a gun from 1902 that letters "no butt" which came to me with a replacement stock that needed to be replaced. I asked Mark when lettering the gun as well as everyone else I could think of but never felt certain what "no butt" really meant. I asked Babe DelGrego if he thought perhaps the butt was left unfinished to be fitted by the new owner and his feeling was that PB would not let an unfinished gun out of the building. The more I think about the checkered butt theory the more it seems to make sense. How did PB designate a checkered butt in the stock books?

Bill, I can be absolutely certain of one gun in particular and I'll post the ser# this evening.

I may have other examples... I'll have to check my records.

Dave, let Dean alone so he can post pix of the gun and the letter. I will search my files for "no butt" orders.

Here is the Grade 4 twenty-gauge with checkered butt which is annotated in the ledger by "no butt". It also had 30" Damascus barrels and originally had no safety but now has a safety.

The serial number is 183258
