Scout got birdy but then gave it up. About that time Ollie crossed the ravine. She picked up the scent and continued to work it out until she located a covey of Mearns.
She is hunting like a dog twice her age.
I’m really pleased with how Ollie points. Upon the flush she holds until I send her for the retrieve, making long retrieves to hand.
Also just as important she stops when I holler wow. I found out this week on a hunt just how important the wow training was from a safety perspective.

Phil, that first photo says it all about hunting over a fine Pointer. Back when I ran some field trials here in Missouri, Pointers (read, English Pointers) ruled the roost. As you know I hunt with Gordon Setters, but I must say, there may not be a better looking point than what a beautiful English Pointer gives us. Congratulations on having the next few years to follow that pup.

Mills You would really enjoy it. It’s beautiful but tough country. Lots of walking, but worth every step. Some days you can’t find a bird, the next you find multiple coveys.
Quail Numbers vary Year to year. Mills I could help advise you on hunting Mearns if you would like to chat.
Seems like every guy with a half broke dog claims he is a guide down here. There is only one I could recommend.

Garry I love their drive. I want a dog that ranges out 100 yards plus in a 180 degree arch in front of me and has the stamina to hunt two to three hours in this tough country.
Their shorthair allows them to hunt some pretty nasty areas. Love the intense drive and pointing. Finally I like white dogs for their visibility.

I'm sitting here butt-deep in snow looking at these photos and starting to plan a trip for someplace warmer and without snow.

Last trip out.

This is an area that Chris Dawe and I hunted a few years ago and where Chris shot his first limit of wild quail.

Quail season closes a week from today. I hope to get the dogs out a few more days if possible.

Dean the arrow actually is pointing at Ollie on point over a covey of quail. Kind of hard to see. Another reason to love white dogs.
I have edited the picture to show a zoomed view.
This area does look a little like Vermont but the pictures are deceiving. This is at the bottom of a canyon we’re there is water.

Except for those occasional yuccas it looks a lot like my "scrubapple hillside" where I took you. One of my favorite spots except we only scored one woodcock with you that day.
