Russ,
Fourteen years is a lot of great memories. As dog lovers we know the day will come when we have to say goodbye but they are worth the pain. I was without a dog for two weeks after my last Lab passed and getting a puppy was the best way to let go and look ahead to more great days in the field with man's best friend.

We faced the same issue a few years ago. My vet came to the cottage and put her to sleep in the living room she loved. It could not have been more gracefully done.

Russ- As bad as you feel (and all of us who hunt with dogs have been there) you must start the process of a successor immediately. It helps more than I can describe.

Russ I'm so sorry for your loss. My wife had ordered a plaque with the following saying on it and gave it to me when Gunner passed with a note as if it was from him. I'd like to share the wording with you.

It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a piece of my heart with them, and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough all the componets of my heart will be dog, and I will become as generous and loving as they are. Anonymous

Russ you gave Chip the final act of love that you could and he will always be with you.
