the near dog has a swiss bell often listed as a sheep bell -i used a much smaller one on m first setter- I was very disappointed when he lost it in a cover not long before he passed. In the painting the bells are hung directly on the collar without an additional loop so they don't hang down to the legs. I never thought that let them ring clearly enough.

since Becasses is in the title - it would be a European woodcock.


the largest bells I have seen used on NA dogs would fit inside those- I saw an old iron cow bell like the back dog's that I joked with my wife about getting to slow a wide ranging young dog.

It surely is a beautiful painting Charlie but I’ll have to say the picture of the setter and woodcock Rod Crossman allowed me to use for the cover picture of the Autumn 2011 issue has been my favorite since I first saw it… “Woodcock and Ferns”
