Mills,
After my 40 year layoff from hunting, I will tell you that hunting ruffed grouse is the ultimate bird hunting challenge in my opinion. They are sneaky little critters, they run when they should fly, or they fly off behind the cover of a large pine tree, your dog can do everything right and the birds make it look like the dog has done everything wrong or the hunter walking up on the dog on point has done something wrong
I kept trying to wait for the perfect point and flush with grouse when I first started hunting, I bet out of every 10 points I get with grouse only one bird will hold, and thats usually early in the season. I have seen my dog get birdy, go into a thicket, the grouse will fly up in the tree and look down and watch him and I think the birds are laughing.
