I can show you some thick cover here in Michigans Upper Pennisula.
Larry I must agree with you on the 7mm-08. for deer it just doesn't get any better. I'm haveing one built on a Ruger #1 action. It will be ready for the woods this fall. The 257 Roberts is another favorite. |

Scott I have a Weatherby Ultralight 7-08 and shot a deer at 250 yards and dropped it in its tracks. there is something majical about the 7mm bullet diameter.

I’m back up at grouse/deer/turkey camp and just took a picture of the selfless 1” silver birch sapling that took one for the team back around ‘97.

Well, now I feel better after reading all of this...but I never thought of mounting the tree as a trophy(!)

I like the 7x57 and the 7x65R Brenecke. I never lost an animal hit with a 7mm bullet. I think the only reason for the American sevens is the dislike of metric calibers.

I much prefer my .45-90's with 300gr cast bullets to the smaller faster bullets. I put two shots through a caribou's heart at 250yds using iron sights some years back; can't see well enough to do that these days! I've never lost an animal hit with one of my .45cal cast bullets either. One shot is generally all you need and they don't ruin much meat at all, which I really appreciate. I had to throw away 50# of an 80# moose neck one year after a friend peppered it with his .25-06 from 50yds. What a mess that was.
I killed a tree like that myself Dean, shooting at a woodcock in Minnesota with Bruce and Charlie and others. I got the woodcock though! |
