A longer bore gauge will allow checking the entire bore for irregularities in boring/honing/polishing etc. A 16” gauge will allow you to check a set of 32” barrels. You can also measure the length of the forcing cones and the length of the choke. Some Parker chokes have been measured at about 6” in length and I once measures cones of 9” in length on a set of barrels that had been severely “messed with”.

With the analog mic, you calibrate the gage using calibrated rings of a certain diameter. For instance, you calibrate the mic using the .700 ring when measuring a 12 bore barrel. You use different shafts depending on the gauge your measuring but you unscrew the gage and screw it on the different shaft, at least that's how my Stan Baker mics works. Never used a digital one but it's probably similar.

I prefer dial analog . No battery’s and as long as you don’t drop it trouble free. Accuracy is limited by the linkage no advantage one vs the other.

there is a ring of a known inside diameter (.700 for a 12) and you zero the digital to that i have both analog and digital- either or- no preference but- you do need to keep a spare battery round for digital unless you like cussing

theunloader.com is the website. Hear nothing but good about Gary's gauges. $125.00. I've not owned one because my Galazan micrometers from 20 years ago work just fine. I also have one of Tony's $500.00 micrometers, but I can't find them in the catalog any more.
