If that big fella was hanging around my house I’d employ the old triple S.

Back in the 1990s in November, I was black bear hunting in Promised Land State Park here in Pennsylvania. A nearby hunter shot a nice bear along the small power line we used to access the area. I helped him field dress the bear and drag him out to the hunter’s Subaru wagon. The bear filled most of the Subaru. The Game Commission folks weighed the bear and took their tooth sample and calculated the live weight of the bear at 502 pounds. The bear in your photos looks much heavier than the bear I helped that hunter with , particularly considering it’s coming out of hibernation. I’ll have to pull out the old newspaper article Tom Fegely wrote for the Morning Call newspaper about that bear and the opening day of the season that year.

What a magnificent beast! Is there a way we can use AI to tag him, then shoot him and make a rug out of his hide, then return him to the primordial forest unharmed and unscathed? Somebody call Dreamworks!!

If you think that once a deer is down the hard work begins just try it with a 300-400lb bear. They don't drag as well as a whitetail.

Dragging any heavy bear is like dragging bags of cement through the woods. Getting them out of a swamp is even worse.

I'm told that bear meat should be cooled as rapidly as possible to keep the meat from spoiling. Around here we throw them into a creek if one is close by
