When my VH 12 doubled, it only did it when I pulled the rear trigger first, which told me that the front sear, which had always gotten the most use, was worn. I dismantled it and 'sharpened' the front sear a bit and it was fixed. I'd guess that this issue and just being grotty inside are the main causes of doubling. And this issue has been discussed at length in the forum.

Hey Mills it's clean, no crud or gunk in it, everything was oiled properly. I took it apart last night. My guess is it has replacement stock and the upper tang sits deep and that allows the rear tang screw to become proud. When that happens it brings the trigger plate up from the bottom and allows the triggers to press on the sears. I think with that pressure and recoil from the shot it engages the sears just enough to allow it to slip or the sear spring is getting weak. I think my first goal is to get the wood raised along the upper tang and see if that helps. Next step....new sear spring! I will say it's an eye opener when it does double, poor duck didn't stand a chance!
Thanks Guys! |

Ha Ha Nice, the screw back down level with the top tang? I guess that's a better way of saying it? Yikes, one is going down and the other is going up and vice versa, I guess it depends on what way you are looking at it, upside down?

All good advise. I doubled my Grant twice on consecutive outings and it sacred me too. I dismounted the locks and could not find anything amiss. My opinion is that it was the first time using it since a long period in for repair and I had been too lax in my grip. After that I consciously applied a little more pressure on my grip and problem solved. Just a simple adjustment in using the gun. Strumming the rear trigger is a easy check for a problem that has not occurred before and when it happens is the first thing I'd think about. If nothing seems off, adjusting the grip pressure could be the cause for the problem.

The joy of buying back a single trigger DHE 20 that my dad had traded away, was somewhat diminished when I had three doubles at the first four stations one day. I let others shoot it and no one was able to make it double, so I chocked it up to being a double trigger guy and not gripping the gun more tightly. That gun and I are not presently on speaking terms.
