I'll never forget that day, that week, that month, that year, that unbroken American spirit that was awakened by that horrific attack...

There were heroic acts by people from many walks, the American spirit was awakened, and the nation immediately re-unified, but not for long. Very quickly partisanship and division returned.

We commenced a war on confused and shifting premises, devoid of clear goals, and with such a predicate, no matter how unbeatable our military was on the battlefield, any appreciable benefit for us today, given the steep human and material costs and repercussions from ill-considered laws, is debatable.

This is no time for “moving on”, as is the disposition of some, from commemorating the attack, one that is singular in our annals with its ghastliness, having targeted for horrific death non-combatant American citizens, by an enemy whose threat to our way of life continues.

Default Neilie’s Point

The simple memorial to Neilie Casey is, at least for me, one of the most personal and moving 911 memorials. It’s on the bluff, right across the road from Nobska Light in Woods Hole, Ma. overlooking the channel between Cape Cod and the islands. It is a beautiful place for sure but it’s very melancholy, a place that we try to visit whenever we get back to the cape.

Neilie was on Flight 11 that day, the first plane that flew into the WTC. Her remains were never found. She was 32, a young mother and she left behind her husband Mike and their 6 month old daughter Riley. Mike was devastated and after he recovered from the shock he felt the need to memorialize the wife he loved so deeply in some special place, but where? He decided on Nobska Light. They both loved the place. It was where Mike proposed to her and where they had their wedding pictures taken. With the help of Senator Ted Kennedy, Mike was able to secure a patch of land from the Coast Guard and he installed a plaque and bench there dedicated to the woman he loved and lost. Neilie’s Point is beautiful and it will stand there as long as the bluff endures. It’s well worth a visit.

Here is a photo of two officers conferring at The Battery, Lower Manhattan, New York City on 9-11-2001. One is with a dog, presumably to assist in finding victims in the rubble.

Is the one on the left New York Fire Department? The officer on the right appears to be New York Police Department.

As you can see, the area is covered in powdery white dust from the collapsed buildings, much of which is pulverized concrete, mixed with asbestos.

I wonder how either of the men is faring, if even alive, today.

Both are NYPD. One with white shirt is an officer Lieutenant at the very least

Our nephews were both NYPD first responders for 911. We got to see one on our recent trip back for the PGCA meeting. He was pretty quiet about it all, but had some gruesome accounts. He gave us a piece of glass from the World Trade Center. What a time we lived through.
