I went with some friends a couple times this past winter to a “Turkey Shoot” across the mountain in Harrisonburg VA . First time I’d been to one in over thirty years I believe . Anyway they had the Wagner shells there . Seems they make a 540 FPS shell and another that’s 690 FPS if memory serves both with #10’s . Anyway I bought a box of the faster one “I think” . Never fired any but I will eventually .

I went to the local club just three miles up the road and they shoot Wagners, both the skeet 1 1/4 oz 9s and the 2-2-10s. We all remember going to the local fair and there was that Thompson air powered BB gun and you had to shoot the star out to win. Even with a lot of BBs, the paper folded back and there would always be a little bit of the star left.

Same principle with the 2-2-10. Thus the mention of blowing holes, so they shoot at a fairly big red dot and if any of it is left you are out. It comes down to shoot offs until a winner is declared. They go through two to three cases a night so the Wagners will stay in business a long time. Shooters from NY, PA, etc. are traveling down here for the shoots according to the president of the club. They have a 37" limit on barrels, but nothing on chokes. No Led Sleds allowed, but bipods and sand bags are allowed here.

I went to the "shooting match" as they are now called. I saw some vintage shotguns that had been modified; there was a Remington 31, several 870s, a couple of model 12s, a Montgomery Wards pump, but most were built on the Savage 210 or 212 slug guns. I thought you may be interested in these custom "shotguns."

Of the four targets pictured, only one cut out the little red dot. It is more difficult than one would think with two ounces of shot. The dot is not very big, but if only a little piece is left, the target is eliminated. This week 2-2-10s, next week 1 1/4 9s. Different guns with different chokes next week.

This seems like drag racing for shotguns! Those are some "tricked-out" guns.

A 71 1/2" barrel, then a 55" and a 48". The first barrel puts you two yards closer to the target. What is surprising is two of them are listed as 16 gauge instead of 12. I would think they all were 12s. If they go for the low estimate, they would be a bargain for what someone paid to have them done. An old shooter has gone to the great turkey shoot in the sky.

I have a contemporary remake of a flintlock club butt fowler and that has a 52" 16 gauge barrel. I thought that was long until I saw those guns...

2-2-10 loads are a Virginia thing. You may notice that any 2-2-10 shells you find are made there, and most of them are shot there.

Bill,

I respectfully disagree, and I don't know why you think "2-2-10 loads are a Virginia thing" and "most of them are shot there."

Wagner has been making shells for nearly fifty-five years and I doubt Virginia alone could have kept them in business. Barrel makers are out of IN, OH, GA, NC, Va, and most assuredly in every Southern state. You tell them the shell you are shooting and they customize the barrel and choke to the shell for the densest pattern.

Go to this website and see that there are shoots everywhere and not every shoot is advertised as there are thousands not listed on the website. I called the manufacturer and she confirmed these shells go most everywhere in the U.S. The 2-2-10 is their most popular shell and you can see shoots listed for MO, PA, TN, VA, etc. using Wagner shells. But a lot of shoots use the cheapest shell they can buy at Wally World. This makes it difficult for as you know, guns shoot each shell differently.

The website I sent is based out of Ohio, and here are rules listed:
